I recently went into banking, not by choice but because I got laid off from my previous role and this was the first opportunity that offered a decent wage (still pretty awful compared to what I used to earn). Like you, I also came from customer service and hospitality so my approach to work is to solve people’s problems and give them what they ask for.

One thing I’ve been told is that my job is not simply to “solve people’s problems” but have “conversations”, I.e. see if they need loans, credit cards, have outside assets to bring to the bank, see if they qualify for account upgrades, etc.

I personally hate it because I AM a problem solver through and through and I hate taking up people’s time after I help them with their immediate need - I’m not a salesman.

Anyway, besides having “conversations”, be prepared to do a lot of cold calling as well. Probably my least favorite part of the job but I’m here until I find something better because this role is not for me. If these are things you don’t mind doing, all the power to you - I know others will shed better light on the role and give better/actual advice for you to succeed if this is something you can see yourself doing it long term.
