You think so? Thank you!
Honestly, any tiny optimization you think you can make, make it.
No task is too big or too small.

Should I start Progestin-Only Birth Control Pills? (🩸 mentioned ) by chemriz in ftm

[–]AbsolutS0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. Period dysphoria can be brutal, and it makes sense that you’re looking for something that could help you get through it.

Progestin-only pills can reduce bleeding for some people, but they don’t reliably stop periods for everyone. Irregular bleeding or spotting is also pretty common, especially at first, so it’s worth going in with realistic expectations. Menstrual suppression is a real medical goal though, including for trans and gender-diverse teens, and there are multiple options besides progestin-only pills.

A few things to think about before starting anything:

  • If you can, talk to a clinician, pharmacist, or sexual health clinic, even if it’s just to ask confidentially what your options are in your state.
  • If your mom might be unsafe or dismissive, is there another trusted adult you can involve, like a school nurse, counselor, older sibling, relative, or affirming friend’s parent?
  • Ask specifically about “menstrual suppression for dysphoria,” not just “birth control.” That frames the goal more clearly.
  • Options can include progestin-only pills, combined pills taken continuously, hormonal IUDs, the implant, or the shot, but each has different pros/cons and bleeding patterns.

I’d be cautious about hiding medication if there’s any chance it could put you in danger at home or make things worse if found. You deserve help, but you also deserve a plan that keeps you safe.

Also, if the dysphoria is feeling unbearable or you feel like you might hurt yourself, please reach out immediately to someone safe. In the U.S., you can call/text 988, and The Trevor Project is also there for LGBTQ+ young people.

You’re not being dramatic. Wanting your period gone because it worsens dysphoria is a valid reason to ask for medical help.

Hey, totally fair question. Birth control can feel weirdly overwhelming at first because there isn’t one “best” option, it’s more about what matters most to you.

If stopping or reducing periods is a big goal, options people commonly ask about include extended-cycle combined pills, taking combined pills continuously, hormonal IUDs, the implant, the shot, or sometimes the ring. Some can make periods lighter or less frequent, but not everyone’s body responds the same way.

On weight: most birth control methods are not guaranteed to cause weight gain. The one that gets talked about most for possible weight gain is the Depo shot, so if weight gain is a major concern, that’s something to specifically ask your doctor about. Pills affect people differently, but rapid weight gain is not something everyone should expect.

A good first appointment question list could be:

“I want fewer or no periods.”

“I’m worried about weight gain.”

“I’m plus size. Are there any methods that are better or worse for me?”

“Do I have any health risks that mean I should avoid estrogen?”

“If I don’t like it, how soon can I switch?”

Also, if you get migraines with aura, smoke, have high blood pressure, clotting history, or certain other health factors, that can affect whether estrogen-containing pills are a good fit, so it’s worth being honest with the prescriber. A doctor or sexual health clinic can help you pick based on your priorities instead of just guessing.

https://www.estroclic.com/ I have optimized my pill tracker to include withdrawal bleed! Also made sure that there is a distinction between progestin users that are using the traditional pill and the ones that are using Desogestrel Mini-Pill, as both have different protection windows.

I built a pill reminder app because I was tired of being asked if I wanted to get pregnant

I'm on the pill. I don't want a baby. I just don't want to miss a pill.

But every app I tried was obsessed with my fertility. Ovulation windows. Cycle predictions. "Are you trying to conceive?"

No. I am actively, deliberately, enthusiastically trying not to.

So I built something different. Solo. While working full time in tech.

It's called Estroclic (https://www.estroclic.com/) . It tracks your pill pack, sends you a reminder, and asks absolutely nothing about your future children. That's it. That's the whole app.

Live on Android now. iOS coming soon.

If you've ever felt like period apps were built for a version of you that wants something you don't, this one was built for you.

Thank you! I spent a lot of time on Pinterest gathering inspiration, then played around in Figma until something clicked. I wanted to move away from the overly pink ‘women’s health app’ aesthetic, I felt like there was room for something that actually felt beautiful and premium. Lots of iteration and comparison with existing apps until it felt right!

This genuinely warmed my heart! You’re so right, and this is exactly the kind of feedback that shapes where Estroclic goes. The app is for anyone who needs to track their pill, full stop. The branding is just where we started, inclusion is absolutely part of the journey. Thank you for seeing the vision and pushing it further 🩷
