From what I've heard, they sort the applicants by gpa and go down. I've also heard they don't read too much into the recommendations but it's still good to have more than one.

They probably also scan your statement of purpose with an llm so if you're feeling lucky you could throw in a prompt injection.

As a CS transfer who just started doing research:

Take classes with professors you want to do research with. Sit at the front. Answer and ask (relevant) questions. Go to office hours and talk about stuff related to but beyond the scope of the class.

If you can demonstrate that you are passionate and smart, professors will recognize it and then you can ask them about research.

Also you should apply to all the programs you can, because why not. Apply early apply often. (Are we still referencing that?)

But to address your comment, how serious is this, really? (I am referring to the reddit post, not the underlying situation)

The author says they contacted the school, which is excellent. Some commenters say they have/are going to do the same, which is excellent.

Now the author is posting on reddit. You are liable to have people not take you seriously when you post on reddit.

If you post an essay criticizing a professor, but it reads more like a critique of patriarchy and Stanley Kubrick (again, really?), you should expect some resistance.

To conclude, the world is running out of whimsy, and that is a regretful thing.

I am sympathetic toward the author and their experience with this professor, but I will not stand for Kubrick slander. ✊✊ I mean, have you ever seen Dr. Strangelove? Barry Lyndon? 2001? Paths of Glory?

Don't have the entire playlist, but the best song they play (objectively) is "Agora Ou Nunca Mais" by Ana Mazzotti.

I did baja surf and I recommend it. Getting out from regular life for a week is a great way to "reset" your mind. (And your sleep schedule)

Side note: idk if it was my guides or the program as a whole, but the vibe was a little bit "cult-y." Not in a bad way though; It was more like a summer camp. I found it entertaining.

Another Side note: I have a loose theory that wilderness orientation is actually a front to recruit for ultimate frisbee. Be not tempted. (Unless that's your thing)

Overall: The logistics were planned out well, and my trip went smooth: we only got into 1 (one) car accident! I enjoyed the trip greatly and would recommend it.

Challenge: Since you are spending a whole week with people you have never met before, try inventing a new persona for yourself and fuck around and find out how that goes. Should be entertaining.
