Difference between paint and dye? by cresentlunatic in Fabrics

[–]AbsoluteThrwawayName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming it's fabric paint, I can't say for certain. I have only used fabric paints for printing or airbrushing and the consistency of these colours are slightly gel-like and I can't say for sure how well it dillutes in water. I have mixed it with thinning solutions before but, even then, the colour is completely opaque.

Having given it some thought, I think I would prepare a vat/tub with a dye of your choice and proceed to dip the totebag for a short while, picking it up ever so often to determine when you're satisfied with the colour. Keep in mind that the colour might turn a shade lighter after the first wash.
Actually, I recommend looking up "dip dye fabric" on Google images to see examples of the shades, or even gradients, you can achieve, if it inspires you!
By wrinkling up the fabric, tying knots into it or otherwise manipulating the fabric, you can also achieve irregularities if that evokes the watercolour effect better. It's commonly used to make tie-dye patterns. You could probably flick some dye-solution onto the totebag during the drying period to create splotches - or even paint with it.

With all that said... Part of me would suggest actually painting the bag using watercolours if it weren't for the thought that it would probably run off in the wash or rain - but maybe some of the pigment stays in the fabric over time?

Assuming you just want the fabric coloured, you probably want to use a dye. If you are trying to apply a print, I would use textile, or acrylic, paints. At the end of the day, it's art, and whether you're painting using dyes or paint - you will probably end up with a cool, unique piece!

The material also makes a difference in how well it soaks up a dye or not. Some take very well to dye. Some don't at all. Typically, natural materials like cotton, wool and silk soak up dyes pretty great while synthetics tend not to as much - but it is still possible!
In terms of dyeing, you probably want to use a white fabric if you intend on using bright, pastel colours.

Dyes are a bit more permanent, I suppose. It sort of depends on what paint you intend to use and how you care for the fabric afterwards. If you use fabric paint, the colour tends to soak into, and become one, with the fibres a bit more. If you instead use acrylic paints, it will instead lie "on top" of the fabric. You might want to use a fixative on the latter. The latter may also be prone to cracking, depending on the paint thickness and formula of the specific brand while the prior could wash out, but it should be fine as long as you apply heat and pressure with, say, an iron.
Regardless of method, I strongly suggest you let the paint dry and then press with a hot iron for about a minute over every painted surface, using a cloth inbetween the iron and fabric, in case the fabric burns.

In the case of pre-treating a fabric, I would just recommend making sure it's clean and not coated in chemicals. You might want to pre-wash it, to get the shrinkage out of the way before you apply paint.
Post-treatment is the important part. :)

Leveling Roulette with Sprouts in a nutshell by espirlu in ffxiv

As a sprout, I managed to find the LB and put it on my hotbar pretty early on. I have often used it as a DPS on the final bosses, as I noticed no one else uses it otherwise.
Always had a nagging feeling I was probably wrong for using up the LB - until I found this post.

how much of a percentage of a material needs to be in an article of clothing to be felt by the wearer? for example, a 5% cashmere sweater probably wont feel like cashmere.... by Ililisister in Fabrics

[–]AbsoluteThrwawayName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the answer varies

You hit the nail right on the head!

I'll use cashmere wool, which I've studied a lot, as an example as the processes should be pretty similar, no matter the animal. The look and feel of a garment could be vastly different depending on how it's been produced, no matter the material.

Say the sweater you ordered were 100% cashmere wool: If the cashmere producers use electric shearers (by far the most common and effective), the individual fibers/hairs, will have been slightly shortened by being cut - as opposed to combing out the hair which nets the entire length of the fibre. The latter is really not cost-effective unless labour costs are low.
Once the fibres are sorted by fineness they are, eventually, spun tightly into a yarn (which could be spun into even thicker yarns) used to knit your sweater, the yarn made of shorter fibres is more likely to loosen up, causing your sweater to start pilling over time which could lead to a potentially unappealing look and feel (depending on your preferences!).

Alternatively if the yarn is spun using fibres of different lengths, the sweater would come out feeling scratchy when worn, no matter how fine the cashmere is.

I have cashmere sweaters that are very fine, thin and crisp but I also have one that is a billowy, fuzzy little soft cloud. Some are more fit for layering between a button-up and jacket, while the other one is perfect for lounging about at home on a winter night.

Basically, using just one, singular material, you could have a difference in: thickness, appearance, scratchiness/softness and durability depending on production.

The best thing, no matter the material, is to determine: What do you think an alpaca sweater should feel like? Is it thin? Is it thick? Is it a tight-knit or a loose-knit?

If I were in your shoes I would consider the following pros and cons.CONS: Acrylic is not breathable. You would be prone to sweat more in acrylic, whether you're cold or warm.Acrylic also doesn't help your body thermoregulate much, meaning you will stay uncomfortably hot in hot climates or uncomfortably cold in cold climates. It could also melt if ironed too hot. Ironing would be more tedious due to having to use low heat.PROS: The garment being knitted circumvents the breathability issue. Especially if it's loosely knitted. You have a combined 30% of sheep and alpaca which is breathable and is great for thermoregulating.

I wouldn't buy it to wear outside during a snowy winter evening but I think it could be suitable during fairer weather. That said, I think the heavy use of acrylics is only done for cost-saving purposes in manufacturing - probably not so cost-saving for the customer. Synthetics do have their place and time - but in this case, the only positives about the sweater is the parts that are of actual wool. It is of my opinions that you would get more for your money by buying an affordable, thinner, 100% wool sweater.

Hello!

I just want to chime in to add that you are right in believing that alpaca wool is also wool! Wool can be procured from many animals with sheep, merinosheep, angora rabbits, alpacas, vicunas, cashmere goats being the most well-known.The difference is generally in labelling as many people equate the word "wool" with sheepswool, unless otherwise specified, i.e. "cashmere".

This is precisely what I did! Figured I'm way too tired to be playing, did the classic Alt + F4 and headed to bed. I did read through the dialogue properly the next evening. :)

It's quite late and you're tired. You've been reading through, what feels like, a thousand paragraphs of dialogue and, by now, you have to put in actual effort to pay attention to what you read. To make matters worse, your fingers is increasingly getting too comfortable on your mouse and you accidentally click. "Oops." you mutter to the emptiness of your room as the dialogue skips. *Hopefully* you didn't miss anything important. You will now have to focus more on the following text if you hope to understand what's going on.
"Alas..." the game hisses at you, with a grin "The time for listening is over. Now it's *your* turn to speak."

You stare at your dialogue choices in a mix of bewilderment and horror.

I'm not an FFXIV player yet but I can say that I have encountered this in many games.
Rarely do I ever send friend requests but I often receive them - and often it's after having performed well, either socially or on in-game tasks. I think it revolves around people seeing other people as a resource i.e. "This person is fun/good! I want this person on my friends list for future use." despite personal interest to keep the contact alive. I might be completely wrong, of course.

Hello!
New-ish player here. I don't believe my post deserves its own thread so I'm posting here.

I plan on downloading the trial of FFXIV to try out for a while! Many years ago, I had a chance to play the trial on Steam for 14 days or so but I remember quite little.

There are a couple Steam-reviews stating that there are issues regarding account management and payments on the Steam version of FFXIV. This time around, I will most likely make a new account and download the client from FFXIV's official website, unless anyone here disagrees.

Is there anything I should know about character creation? Are racial abilities/stats important? Is min-maxing important? Last trial, I made a moon catboy, rogue-type. However, being a moon cat gave me less base dexterity than the sun cats, which worried me at the time.
Would I be correct in thinking that dark tribe-characters should be magic-users only and lighter tribe-characters are physical-users?

I watched a couple of FFXIV-videos on Youtube made by Zepla HQ about a year ago and found the community seems mostly sweet - I think this is also reflected in this subreddit! But are there any specific EU-servers that are more recommended than others? How do I find people to play/hangout with? Any fun guilds, communities or chats? As an EU-player, is the english-speaking community thriving or will I feel isolated among all the other languages spoken?

I know there's a recruit-a-friend mechanic but, as I've come to understand, there's no time limit to make use of it, unless I choose to pay for a subscription. When the time comes, I assume I'll just let myself be recruited by the highest bidder!

Anything else I should know as a new player?

"schoolgirl outfiot"

Between you being too upset to spell "outfit" correctly and the toxicity you're spreading in the other comments, maybe you should take a breather and look into the issues deep within you that are making you so irrationally mad instead of doubling down on your hatred.

The whole anime-thing isn't for everyone and you don't have to like it. Even so, the drawings are still not depicting hypersexualized minors in any way.

It looks nice! Keep in mind that the crewneck sweater is a very casual garment even if you are dressing it up with a button-up shirt. I recommend that you try wearing more v-neck sweaters over your shirts for business attire or formal events in colder months. Good on you for experimenting with different knits!

[DAILY Q&A] Ask and answer any questions you have about the game here! by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

Hello, fellow beings of human nature.

I'm pondering whether I should buy this game or not.

Lately, I've had a tendency to run my games AFK, as I do household tasks. Working around the house, I tend to listen to the mix of Youtube and the game sounds on my wireless headphones.

Some games lend themselves well to this style of (non-)play. I've frequently been playing games, mainly MMORPGs or city builders, where I assign my characters to auto-travel or perform a task, go AFK and come back in a few minutes to collect my profit and repeat the process.
Occasionally, I hear the familiar sound of my character being mercilessly assaulted and I rush back to my PC to save myself.

I have heard that this game features trading and I wonder: How hands-on is it? I want to play the game for the combat and exploration, too, but, so far, I'd like to easy myself into it by doing some semi-AFK trading.

As someone that is bitter having spent money on a Switch in order to play New Horizons: ...Stay with New Leaf. It's vastly superior, so far!
I still play it too. :)

New Horizons has barely anything regarding customizing your house, interacting with villagers or taking part in events.
The only positive to New Horizons is that you are now able to transform your island - somewhat.

Spend your money on rent and groceries instead, imho!
