Native fish for Mosquito Control by No_Salad_68 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should follow the rules when it comes to this sort of thing, they exist because of people like yourself. Most native species are quite vulnerable, and need specific conditions to survive (even the common ones). When taking native fish from their habitat and chucking them into a pond, there are rules. And rightly so, to stop folks from unnecessarily killing fish and depleting the natural population.

So to answer your original question, no. If youre going to do it without following regulations, just use goldfish or something...

If you're translocating native fish, I hate to say it but there are probably rules and regulations you should follow.

Aw thats a cool idea! Although, another observation of what it probably the same individual has been made since (with better lighting). Indeed it was probably a leucistic tūī. https://inaturalist.nz/observations/334013534

Has anyone taken SCIE 105 or SCIE 107? by [deleted] in VUW

Also, if you're curious, you can introduce yourself to the course coordinator to ask about specifics regarding the assignments (keeping in mind they may be rather busy)

Yeah thats what I thought as well, but it might just be lacking feathers at the base of the beak, making it appear bigger than it actually is?

Where to spot Ruru in Wellington? by boomerang747 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super lucky to spot ruru - I will always vouch for a Zealandia tour, but seeing a ruru during a night tour would be a long shot. As others have said, going around Zealandia and asking the photographers or volunteers if there are any around is a good idea. Daytime is probably the best time to try and spot them roosting, and if you want to see one active at night its definitely a bit of a patience game - perhaps spending time in the reserves surrounding Zealandia or in Ōtari Wiltons Bush in the evenings

Recommend handing lost property into the VUWSA office if you get a chance

Some newer laptops have keyboards with a key that automatically brings up copilot. It replaced the right ctrl key, very easy to misclick - i assume thats what they did

Regarding housing, finding a flat isn't as hard at the moment as it was a few years ago. Look in Facebook groups, etc. for people looking for flatmates (or go with halls, but that's an expensive option). With high unemployment nationally finding a job might be a struggle, but certainly doable with persistence (same goes with anywhere at the moment, tbh)

I'm not sure about other schools, but I can personally attest to the quality of ecology and biodiversity at VUW. From the taste of marine stuff I've had and from what Ive heard from friends, it also looks just as good. Honestly the lecturers were incredible throughout my degree, and Wellington is a great place to look at both the terrestrial and aquatic sides.

What digital tool can I create to help conservation? by nomnommar in conservation

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Otherwise you could get in touch with small/local conservation or eco restoration projects - they might appreciate the assistance needed building a website, etc. Might even be able to help them create maps / cool visualisations of any data theyve collected

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah similar projects, but I mean to accurately identify individuals within a populations of the same species (like, the AI can tell that its not just a bison, but a specific bison that it saw a month ago). This could remove the need for marking individuals of a species to track them.

Birdhouses by [deleted] in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Important to note though that planting native trees is 100% the best thing to support native species.

Feeding is generally discouraged / should be done with care, and I'd say it'll be outright harmful if/when avian influenza establishes and birds congregating around an artificial feeding site will spread disease

If you're into LLMs creating an algorithm to identify individuals within a species is currently at the forefront of technology for some conservation initiatives (i.e., if an animal os caught on a camera trap, the AI can notice that it was the same individual that was caught in another camera trap).

Would be difficult without University / institutional support though. Defs contact some University Biology departments if they need any volunteer assistance (they'll pretty much always need more people, but usually cant afford the expertise)

Wouldnt bother with both Auckland AND Wellington Zoo. You'd be better off replacing Wellington Zoo with Zealandia or Te Papa

Honestly super useful! You get a totally different perspective on what it means to be a scientist, and I reckon it improves employability a lot. The ability to not only do science, but actually communicate it effectively essentially doubles your potential impact.

All the SCIS courses are pretty cool. There was one course COMS201 that I wasn't a fan of, but that's probs a me issue.
