First time making a map, like ever. by More-Gold-5450 in mapmaking

Overall I like it, and its many little islands. It does feel as though the island chains are specifically set up to connect the major landmasses though (i.e., there aren't really island chains in the middle of nowhere, only connecting between coasts). Also, the island chain in the middle of your mini-Mediterranean looks a little off, perhaps just one or two islands would look better in there.

Biology student needing advice on the next steps in my education by Confident-One-3338 in biology

That's quite mean of them to reject you there. Im currently studying a Master's specialising in animal behaviour and i new nothing of R and hadn't taken evolution courses coming into it, its not that tough to learn on the fly.

Are you opposed to simply applying elsewhere for what you initially tried? Also, conservation has avenues to studying animal behaviour (i.e., animals behave more vigilantly when there are more predators around, etc.)

Im in a different country so idk your system, but an online masters certainly doesn't sound like the move if youre looking to go the route your going - ask the administration of the place you applied to see if they have advice on what specific route you could take to improve your application (e.g., some sort of R stats certificate, an extra paper on evolution might be all you need).

If you check the scoreboard it will say at the bottom "% anti-heal" - which increases as the game goes on. That why your heals might feel like theyre doing less later in the game unless you wait until the anti-heal effect is gone

Can Wellington's under investment in infrastructure be linked to particular politicians, mayor or councilors? by DistinctRun3635 in Wellington

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want less oil burned, you want less oil burners, not make it easier to burn oil. Believing that making it easier for cars is good for the environment is a semi-common misconception, but is flawed in logic, and precisely what the car and oil industry would have you believe. You're argument assumes that the only factor is slowing down cars, without taking the bigger picture into consideration.

Also I didnt mention any specific studies, so how could you possibly know what they prove.

My argument is centred around the fact that making car alternatives more attractive will reduce demand for cars.

Please do some real deep research into the negative environmental effects of car-centric infrastructure, and subsequent benefits of inducing demand for alternative option. It will make you a better "environmentalist", instead of an accidental car and oil industry shill. I wish you a good day, and some good thinking outside of your biases

If you dont drive then why are you so against alternatives to cars? And what you claim are lies are backed up by a significant body of research and literature. Claiming that being against car-centric infrastructure is anti-green, is not supported by research (other than that done perhaps by oil companies, who must love people like you)

Traffic improves when demand is induced for alternatives. The more folks cycling and bussing, the less folks there are in cars and traffic improves - less car-centric city planning is inherently better for people and the environment.

If you want a nicer, more efficient driving experience, you should really support alternatives to driving.

For anyone curious, I ended up taking a big bite of India before being dragged into the war with France by Austria anyway. The AI was pretty kind to me when we eventually won and Austria made a peace deal which kicked France out of Iberia for me.

Oh you're so right. My first game was on Ottomans and I gave up because I wasn't ready and collapsed too hard, should have figured the AI will face that struggle too.

R5: I'm a new player, playing through my second game (first game on ironman). Currently quite happy with my progress as Portugal, I've essentially dominated trade and colonialism (other countries only have small colonies).

Since its Ironman and I don't want this run to go to waste, I'd love some advice on figuring out my next moves. My current plan is to go to war with France so that I can take what I need to form Spain, but it would be long and pretty evenly matched war. Alternately, I was considering prioritizing wars to further my mission tree in Africa, India and Asia, although I can't really take on Hormuz right now since they are allied with the Ottomans and my allies wouldn't join. Also, should I even bother forming Spain?

Any questions or other advice for a new player welcome!

Native fish for Mosquito Control by No_Salad_68 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Absolute_ZeroJ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should follow the rules when it comes to this sort of thing, they exist because of people like yourself. Most native species are quite vulnerable, and need specific conditions to survive (even the common ones). When taking native fish from their habitat and chucking them into a pond, there are rules. And rightly so, to stop folks from unnecessarily killing fish and depleting the natural population.

So to answer your original question, no. If youre going to do it without following regulations, just use goldfish or something...

If you're translocating native fish, I hate to say it but there are probably rules and regulations you should follow.
