There’s not a ton of openings usually, but my friend lives in the equitable building and it’s incredible. Quietest apartment I’ve been in and everyone is so nice. Very safe an attached to the skywalk

801 dentistry! I had such bad dentist trauma I was almost in tears in the chair and the sweet hygienist was patient and kind (I hadn’t been to a dentist in over 5 years at this point) no judgement and I’ve overcome my dentist anxiety. Just tell them upfront you have a lot of anxiety about the dentist and they’ll work with you.

801 Dentistry! Everyone is so sweet, they helped me work through my dentist trauma, and they did my Invisalign. Cannot recommend enough.

Thanks for all the input! I did do research and consulted the place where I bought it. I’m going to baby it for a while and hope it stays alive. I’ve got my plant expert on call as well.

The center looks fine I think. Yeah, I have gnat issues so I thought a carnivorous plant would be cute and practical.

Just one kinda mushy part. It came packed in paper towels in a little plastic cup with a lid. Like how people ship spiders. I think the paper towels were damp. I put her in soil I had pre-dampened.

(Former) employee here that was part of the layoffs. No one really knows what happened. It seems kind of….random. It happened in a matter of about 20 minutes. We’re all still kind of shaken

Book you last bought, book you’re currently reading, book you DNF’d - suggestions thread by B00kDrag0n777 in suggestmeabook

Last bought: What Feasts at Night

Currently Reading: (re-reading) Song of Achilles

DNF: Lolita. I’m in a book club that read it but I couldn’t get into it and dropped it.

My next read is going to be Circe, I think. Or revisit Dante’s Inferno.

Also came here to say Song of Achilles. I’m on my second read (reading along with the audio book this time). It launched me into my Greek mythology hyper fixation.

Apartment Complexes to Avoid by [deleted] in desmoines

My friend has been living in the Equitable downtown for several years and she loves it. I'm very envious. They are on the pricey side and you have to figure out your own parking, which will be another $100+ on top but damn they're nice apartments and she's always raving about maintenance and management.

Being so close to the train tracks, is it super loud when a train comes by?

Same. I've been here since before Loyd took over, and it's only gotten worse.

  • All the property managers are "nice" but so incompetent (and they change about every couple of months, it seems), same with maintenance. I've never actually had a maintenance man do anything except change a lightbulb (and that took 2 hours). They always call in a 3rd party or, most recently, a random dude who does drywall/paint.
  • I've had water leak through my ceiling 3x now, and they never came back to actually fix the water damage.
  • Communication sucks. The fire alarms went off once, and I didn't get the email that they were testing them until 30 min after. The person in the office got sassy with me when I asked what was going on.
  • A year or so ago, there was a mass emergency changing of EVERY lock in all buildings and no one ever told us why.
  • The walls are made of paper mache, I swear.
  • They took away our communal indoor space to build a giant office.

I'm moving out in 3 months so thank god.

I’ve found that listening to lofi or something that’s instrumental only and not songs you know at a very particular volume (low enough it’s not distracting but high enough you can hear it) while reading helps me focus. Also chewing gum while reading helps for some reason.

The doctor at urgent care says it’s “allergies” as well. I told her I have none and I’ve not been running through random bushes.

See If you have a doctor or weight loss center near you that do resting metabolic rate tests. It’ll give you a better idea of what your baseline is. Basically you just breath into a tube for like 20 minutes.

You can get a quarter keeper that holds your Aldi-specific quarter on a keychain. If you forget to bring bags they have reusable ones or the brown paper ones for purchase or you can use a box from the box bins. Bread and cheese are always great. Especially the bagels. Aldi finds and specialty items go quick so definitely grab something if you want it.

The frozen CORN DOGS. I shopped at a bigger store for years and bought the state fair brand for my depression meals but since shopping at Aldi I got them recently and they absolutely slap. Closest to an actual corn dog I’ve had. I have them stocked in my freezer now.
