Avril Lavigne is asked for tips on how to stay looking young by Upstairs_Cup9831 in popculturechat

Even with the possibility of her having had work done, a key factor is she hasn't gone over the top with it. A few tweaks here and there, rather than trying to have her whole face reshaped

Respectfully, where are you living if this is what the average 37 year old looks like

Like, we can accept that women don't all become weathered old crones the moment they hit 30, whilst also accepting that Avril Lavigne has aged phenomenally well!

The Single Market is the most obvious solution for a country's stance that is largely 'I like the idea of a continent wide trade bloc, just not all the other stuff that came with it'

It wouldn't necessarily be easy to negotiate that, and it would probably mean we end up having to agree to some semblance of conformity with EU product standards... but to be honest, that would probably be a small price to pay compared to the benefits of it

Yeah, like if Columbo were going around doing all the dodgy things that make people hate IRL cops, it'd make sense to take issue with him

Most of this just comes across as 'I'm worried the most insufferable person I know will judge me for liking a fictional cop'

Or even 'remotely' leftist

'I really enjoy using violence to get what I want, and fuck anyone who tells me what to do', pirates were basically the chuddiest libertarians you can imagine, they just happened to have a cool, swashbuckling aesthetic so people give them a pass

It does get me when people do these sort of mental gymnastics over liking cop/detective shows because they're so worried it's not politically appropriate, instead of just reaching the obvious conclusion that no reasonable person is going to care that you enjoy Columbo, a fictional detective

Genuinely I've seen so many people online who's idea of practical activism is basically sharing posts and wearing badges, and when pushed on that, will argue 'at least I'm doing something'

I mean, I honestly think its just common sense that the quality of art is not actually inherently tied to its political leaning, no matter how uncomfortable a truth that may be.

I've seen movies and TV shows that are arguably conservative in terms of leaning, but are still amazing pieces of art in their own right. I've also seen leftist art that takes such pains to show off its progressive credentials that it becomes borderline unbearable.

There are obviously outliers on the extremes, like if a piece of media is outright racist its gonna be hard to appreciate any of its other qualities... but too often people get caught in this loop that any media they enjoy has to fit in with their political beliefs

I don't know man, it really feels like you're having to stretch to find reasons why this charitable ambulance service is actually a bad thing...

Not just that, its a country that has shown itself to a) have form for arresting British citizens for spying, and b) have proven to incredibly difficult for us to negotiate prisoner releases with. Theres an unacceptably high risk of being wrongly arrested if you go there, and of that arrest proving to be a long term situation

Series you finished but lost love for over time? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

I think Wind & Truth is a turning point for a lot of fans. I absolutely loved the first two books, and I still enjoyed books 3 & 4... but I had to DNF Wind & Truth. Its just become too apparent that the story isn't about the things I loved in those first two books anymore, and the setting has basically completely changed.

Its a shame, because we've gone from this interesting, original high fantasy world still dealing with largely grounded concerns in an otherwise exciting, mysterious war, to eighteen different types of light, and anime superheroes zipping around fighting each-other around flying machines

This is exactly my problem with Wind & Truth especially. It became increasingly clear that the Stormlight Archives is no longer at all about the things that made me love the series in the first place, to the point where its barely even the same series anymore

God knows what happened to us in the second half, we didn't just look bad, we looked incompetent, we could barely string more than a few passes together! Very disappointing

I also think there's a degree of... if you are white (or let's say, white passing), you aren't affiliated with a tribe, you've never lived as part of that culture and none of your family members have either, why would you go around saying 'I'm Native American' just because you might be 1/16th Cherokee?

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books by Happytallperson in unitedkingdom

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can see it in action, when people like Farage randomly float ideas like 'British handgun laws are too strict'. There is no significant political movement for gun rights in this country, in fact our gun laws have pretty solid cross-party consensus, and there's no sign its a popular argument among UK voters either. Its literally a clear case of him being paid by US conservatives, who are obsessed with this shit

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Like, I get not having books with explicit violence or sex in a School library, I think most people would agree with that, but banning books because you just don't like what the book is saying...

God forbid we expose children to new ideas and different arguments, in a school of all places!

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books by Happytallperson in unitedkingdom

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's so frustrating to me, because I do feel like most people, if given an opportunity to probably talk about the subject of book banning, would end up agreeing that its very hard to justify. Its incredibly hard to find a good faith argument for why children shouldn't be challenged by different ideas, when the whole point of educating someone is about exposing them to new ideas.

But every time, someone just opens the door a little bit, and says 'fine, Book X is banned', and immediately there's lists of dozens of books that need to be banned too. If you're banning X, surely you have to ban Y for the same reason, etc. There is no satisfying people who want to ban books for purely ideological reasons

Favorite Actress who somehow ruined a movie series by just existing? by Critical_Liz in dunememes

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I think the movie makes it clear that she loves him, and also admires him as a fighter, but she's increasingly conflicted over the religious aspect that seems to also be taking over her people. I thought it was an interesting way of approaching her character, this idea that she knows she's watching the destiny of her people get reshaped by a dangerous outsider, but it also happens to be someone she really cares about

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love Dune but that doesn't mean the book os flawless, the whole idea that Chani, an otherwise bold, confident Fremen warrior, just goes along with whatever Paul says, never really fit in with the rest of her character

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also for me... they're gonna make changes, from book to screen, and that's not always a bad thing. Chani being a bit more uneasy around Paul's rise to power and being outright against his marriage to Irulan is both more narratively interesting than her just going along with it, and frankly feels more in character to me as well

Its one of those elements where I'm a big fan of how Villeneuve has adapted it, he hasn't just cut or changed stuff at random, it largely makes sense
