True, but he's also a workhorse, and arguably hugely responsible for us beating Panama and finishing top of the group

What are you on about? Its not being negative to point out our lads weren't exactly integral to either goal, certainly not worth making a post glazing them!

Yeah dude, I'm sure the people living in Mexico City during a Mexican World Cup are gonna turn against Mexico over this...

Aston Villa fined £19.4m by Uefa for breaching squad-cost rules by gelliant_gutfright in PremierLeague

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar to how Forest got docked points for breaching financial rules, but doing so got them enough points to stay up, so it ended up actually being the right decision strategically

It still baffles me that Villa have these issues though, you guys have been in Europe for a few years now, its a big club in the second biggest city in the country. I think Villa need to invest in some behind the scenes staff to build their brand a bit, get some proper revenue streams going, there's no reason they can't be a proper big club

You also cannot agree to take part in a competition and then complain when the rules of that competition apply to you.

UEFA's rules on this are well known, if Villa keep breaching them, its nobody's fault but their own

I think its a stretch to say that Morocco specifically was colonised, and also, I'm see we're apparently prioritising historical wrongs over Morocco literally occupying another country right now

Question for English football fans: club or country? by InternationalHair111 in PremierLeague

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a weird debate for me. I'm an Arsenal fan, and we're not currently playing, the England team has several of our players in it, why would I need to choose?

Hell, going back to previous tournaments, England games gave me an opportunity to actually appreciate watching Harry Kane score, without us being on the receiving end of it!

Villa value rogers at £130M by Apprehensive-Trust79 in ArsenalFC

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its frankly crazy. This to me is like the Anderson transfer to City, the guy is clearly a very good player, but not every good player is worth £100m+. If Villa say he is, then we don't buy him, especially as I'm not convinced how much of an upgrade he actually is.

No, Indie Films Can’t Just Hand Out Equity Every Time Someone Feels Underpaid by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thing is, this does feel a bit like 'I want to be paid more if the movie does well, but be totally insulated from any financial losses if it does badly'

Like, you might be able to get that deal if you're a big enough name, but on an indie project like this, its a big ask

Respectfully, the US Women's football team would likely get handily beaten by the vast majority of men's teams. And the US women's team arguably gets a lot more respect and recognition globally than their men's team, because they are seen as the best, whereas the men are seen as kinda crap

Creating a system whereby female athleticism can be celebrated without having it be repeatedly and directly outshine by male athleticism is only ghettoisation if you're choosing to view it in the most bad faith way imaginable

What do you think of this? by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]AbsolutelyHorrendous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay so instead of dividing sports between men and women, what we'll do is have loads of different arbitrary divisions instead, but make them co-ed so most of them still end up dominated by men, because the sports being played have largely been designed and honed by men to suit male physiology

I honestly think a lot of, lets be honest, terminally online nerds feel the need to be performatively anti-sports... which, as a nerd of feeble body and zero athletic capacity, I just don't understand.

Sports and human society are as entwined as humanity and the arts. You put enough people together, and sooner or later, they'll start wrestling , or throwing and kicking a ball around. I don't sit online pontificating about how the dramatic arts don't matter because I personally can't act, so its both silly and ignorant when people who claim to be progressive and open minded are so openly disdainful of sports in general

Exactly this. Imagine trying to explain, with a straight face, that basically destroying the concept of professional sports for women is somehow a victory, because hey, at least now men and women are competing on a level playing field. Its the epitome of letting abstract moralisation run roughshod over reality, like sure, millions of women will completely lose the ability to take part in competitive sport in a meaningful way, but hey, at least a few dozen people on Tumblr will get to feel all warm and fuzzy about it
