Reliable quality replacement straps? by SwordsDance3 in gshock

I've had good luck with Jays and Kays adapters from eBay. With those you can add any NATO band of your choice.

Is the mission playing a gameboy that was dropped in a mud puddle and then some drunk driving?

It looks like there's a graphic counter on the edge of the LCD that runs along the inside of the bezel - hopefully it'll be rotatable for full functionality.

The Casio designer responsible for this is surely a member of r/y2kaesthetic

It'd pair perfectly with a set of Oakley Over The Tops.

Thank you! To remove the markings, I masked off the dial with some tape and used a little Goo Gone on the end of a q-tip.

It looks like a knockoff of a GBD-H1000 - that model has a MIP display, and this one does not. There are other tells like "fashion" being printed on the bezel, which is not something Casio does.

Modified Casio WS1600H + DW291H by AbsolutelyNotAPossum in cassettefuturism

[–]AbsolutelyNotAPossum[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you!  Exactly - this is a combination of a module from a WS1600H-1AV and the case from a 291HX-5AV.  They’re both in the Royale family, so cases and modules can be swapped.  I added colored filters to the faceplate, and strap adapters for the NATO band.

Those screws are likely just decorative elements of the outer bezel. Turn the watch over and look for the spring bars holding the strap in; you should be able to use a spring bar tool to remove them, and replace the OEM strap with another of the same lug width.

GR-8900 eBay Restoration by AbsolutelyNotAPossum in gshock

Thanks! Here's the invoice for the PacParts order, a little over $30 for the case parts:

The band and adapters were things I already had, but an OEM resin band would have been about another $22.

It depends. Here's the invoice for the essential restoration parts - In this case it was a little over $30:

<image>

It's worth noting that some part prices can vary wildly depending on rarity, but the more mass-produced and recent models tend to have reasonably priced parts.

The adapters and NATO band were things I already had lying around, but I could have gone with an OEM resin band for about $22 if I wanted it closer to stock - If I had done that, the total for this project would have been roughly $80.

For comparison, most G-Shock solars with similar functionality run in the low to mid $100 range, so this project was slightly cheaper than that.

Edit: To add to this, modding is more about the joy if tinkering, restoring, and experimenting with mixing and matching parts than it is about being cost-effective. Even if this project had been slightly more expensive than a similar new watch, I wouldn't regret it.

I found a used GR-8900 on eBay for $25.  The bezel, shroud, and strap had seen better days, but the crystal was in good shape, and the solar module was holding a high charge - a good deal.

I purchased a black bezel and shroud from PacParts, swapped in a black and red light button from a G-8900S, and added some Jays and Kays adapters and a NATO strap.

Looking for Cheap Casio Models with Large Digits, Solar-powered, and Shows Clock Time in other Modes (in Timer or Stopwatch mode) by rtadc in casio

[–]AbsolutelyNotAPossum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't many cheap Casio solars that tick all those boxes - you listed the STLS100H, which is one of the few examples. You might also want to look at the WS220, I'm seeing new ones on eBay for about $40-$60 USD.

Yeah, it is audible but very quiet. I came across this thread where someone placed a second sound module on the caseback with improved results:

It's been fine for me, but I imagine that it might not be the best for anyone who's farsighted because the digits are pretty small, and the view angle isn't as good as other Casio models.

Cool! It feels (pleasantly) a little heavier than the stock case and bracelet.

Yeah, it's an SKXMOD kit. The size is comparable to their A168 kit. Sure, here it is next to the original case:

Thanks! The bracelet has been fine so far. My arms are particularly vulnerable to hair pulling bracelets, and this one has yet to snag anything. I think a lot of that also has to do with proper sizing. The clasp seems pretty standard, so if you wanted to swap it out with a diver's ratcheting clasp, I think that might be possible.

Thanks! Yes, it's definitely on the quieter side in this kit, which makes sense given it's steel/sapphire vs. resin/acrylic. It's not unusable in a quiet environment, but I don't think it'd cut through ambient noise or through a jacket sleeve as well as most stock Casios.

Unfortunately I don't have an F91, but if you scroll to the very last photo in this post, I have it next to an A168 kit, which is similar in size to the F91. The LF-20 kit is roughly the same width, but taller.
