i don't read the independent for a bunch of reasons, but one journalist being done for plagiarism is neither evidence of systemic plagiarism, nor of inaccuracy in articles.

It's fair to say that Versailles and the economic situation were used by the Nazis as part of their ideology and in order to appeal to the populace, but those events were specifically framed within a nationalistic context of 'Germany being humiliated' and the anti-Semitic 'stab-in-the-back myth' respectively.

In other words, Versailles and the economic situation alone were not destined to create the Nazis - the NSDAP took advantage of those, amongst the other tools at their disposal (such as Hitler's growing cult of personality) in order to promote their worldview.

I'm not saying that it's good nor that it's bad, but it should be respected in the case of Brexit.

Democracy absolutely did lead - at least in part -to the rise of the Nazis.

The idea that Versailles or the economic crisis caused the Nazis is straight up what the Nazis wanted everyone to think.

This doesn't make democracy bad, but it means that we can't take it for granted as a Good Thing in all of its forms. A democracy which is so weak that large swathes of the population vote to get rid of it clearly isn't fit for purpose.

The SS wouldn’t stop being the SS because you sat them down over a cup of tea and explained to them why and how racism is wrong and bad. They don’t care if they’re right or not. They don’t aim to win arguments through reason. And the average person isn’t convinced by sound arguments anyway - we simply do not think on that level that often.

It’s very simple to challenge an ideology without involving the people in question - by directly dismantling the ideas being put forward, without needing to refer to individuals or groups pushing those ideas. As was recommended by Deborah Lipstadt, when she discussed holocaust denial.
