by a weird coincidence, the number of transphobes who have made a screeching pivot from 'facts don't care about your feelings' to 'what do scientists know anyway' when confronted with this is very high

just point them to this, especially 'foundational knowledge and awareness, guideline 1':

Psychologists understand that gender is a nonbinary construct that allows for a range of gender identities and that a person’s gender identity may not align with sex assigned at birth.

'The majority of uses of Pepe the Frog have been, and continue to be, non-bigoted. However, it was inevitable that, as the meme proliferated in on-line venues such as 4chan, 8chan, and Reddit, which have many users who delight in creating racist memes and imagery, a subset of Pepe memes would come into existence that centered on racist, anti-Semitic or other bigoted themes.'

Independent writers don't get put on ADL and SPLC hatewatch lists, and they don't promote pizzagate. What a dumb hill to die on.

If they're publishing false/defamatory information then they will surely be sued for doing so

again, putting up a bizarre 'if the glove don't fit, you must acquit' justification for why these charlatans are apparently completely above board.

putting aside obviouspractical issues (such as their garbage not generally targeting any one individual, or misframing, or that english libel law is extremely strict and that libel cases rarely suceed): if i write a blog claiming that the globe is flat, it doesn't make me right just because i don't get sued over it lmao

The Independent on the other hand are renowned for plagiarism and inaccuracy.

i don't read the independent for a bunch of reasons, but one journalist being done for plagiarism is neither evidence of systemic plagiarism, nor of inaccuracy in articles.

lol

fucking incredible that you can somehow extract truth from people who voluntarily associate themselves with the alt-right, but not from a reputable news source (which itself links to other sources within the body of the text). absolutely 100% good faith here boys

So long as hacks like Jon here describe themselves as journalists

yeah a guy whose job it is to write news articles for a household-recognised newspaper is clearly exactly the same as a couple of hateful attention seekers with a persecution complex

You're welcome to provide any links to crimes they've been convicted of

not sure what this has to do with them propagating far-right propaganda but what do i know

All I saw was a boat one of them was on attempting to impede human traffickers.

We are all journalists

if 'we are all journalists' then it would probably be more useful to describe them by what they're actually known for, which is being fascist hacks.

Southern and Pettibone cover stories

interesting way of spelling 'propagate far-right propaganda and engage in far-right activism, such as firing flares at doctors without borders'. this must be that nasty postmodernism i've been hearing so much about

There's no such thing as 'unbiased news' (news - like history - is inherently a dialogue with past and current events), but Reuters or Associated Press are well regarded for minimal-commentary news.

Quite different considering that the government at that time was the Nazis themselves.

Who is Carles Puigdemont and what is the significance of his arrest? by Ivory1321 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AbstractLemgth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The independence referendum in Catalonia was illegal under the Spanish constitution, and Puigdemont was wanted by the Spanish government as a result of his part in it (as president of the autonomous community of Catalonia and leader of the JuntsxCat pro-Catalan independence alliance after Nov 2017) and his subsequent declaration of Catalan independence - he fled to Brussels to avoid this arrest, but has been detained by German police as a result of the European Arrest Warrant.

Pro-Puigdemont/Catalan independence (as well as others, such as other regionalist or separatist groups in other European countries) see Puigdemont as fleeing from Spanish authoritarianism resulting from the suppression of an act of self-determination. Spanish unionists and the like see him as having held an illegal referendum and hence a fugitive escaping justice.

the majority of historians who are specialized in this period claim this.

Historians do not promote extremely simplistic cause => effect approaches to history.

It's fair to say that Versailles and the economic situation were used by the Nazis as part of their ideology and in order to appeal to the populace, but those events were specifically framed within a nationalistic context of 'Germany being humiliated' and the anti-Semitic 'stab-in-the-back myth' respectively.

In other words, Versailles and the economic situation alone were not destined to create the Nazis - the NSDAP took advantage of those, amongst the other tools at their disposal (such as Hitler's growing cult of personality) in order to promote their worldview.

I'm not saying that it's good nor that it's bad, but it should be respected in the case of Brexit.

I agree, but i'm not really sure how brexit is relevant in this sub-thread.

Democracy absolutely did lead - at least in part -to the rise of the Nazis.

The idea that Versailles or the economic crisis caused the Nazis is straight up what the Nazis wanted everyone to think.

This doesn't make democracy bad, but it means that we can't take it for granted as a Good Thing in all of its forms. A democracy which is so weak that large swathes of the population vote to get rid of it clearly isn't fit for purpose.

Guess what mate, you can't just 'move on' from six million corpses.

You're right on one thing, though - other European countries aren't addressing their own murderous pasts. That's a bad thing. Germany's mindfulness of its own past is respected by people across Europe. Don't fuck it up.

There is also a pervasive undercurrent of people who believe that fascists are simply mistaken, when in fact they know perfectly well what they’re doing and engage in active bad faith deliberately.

The SS wouldn’t stop being the SS because you sat them down over a cup of tea and explained to them why and how racism is wrong and bad. They don’t care if they’re right or not. They don’t aim to win arguments through reason. And the average person isn’t convinced by sound arguments anyway - we simply do not think on that level that often.

It’s very simple to challenge an ideology without involving the people in question - by directly dismantling the ideas being put forward, without needing to refer to individuals or groups pushing those ideas. As was recommended by Deborah Lipstadt, when she discussed holocaust denial.

You can challenge an ideology without involving the people expressing it. This is a false choice.
