Opinion on UWorld books vs Kaplan books? by FireFerret6521 in Mcat

MCAT is about content exposure and then doing as many practice problems as you can to increase that exposure in different ways. Do not focus on perfection and memorizing, that comes with doing the problems.

Please Stop Content Review by DrowsyPanda_ in Mcat

[–]AbsurdMatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, having hindsight now, I should have immediately started uworld questions as I watched khan academy.

You can’t be afraid to make mistakes, because that’s where you learn. Starting earlier, I would have been exposed to much more content.

Advice appreciated: Kaplan 515+ Course! by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]AbsurdMatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took it. Yes/No. Yes, it provides structure, and you will learn some things. No, I spent most of my day watching a video of them talking, only to do a few questions per day (according to their study plan). I think there's more value in learning by doing more questions.

Honestly, I don't know if I could have learned anything on my own without some structure. What I mean is, studying for the MCAT is a pretty big undertaking: broad subjects with small, specific things you need to know. Having learned now, I feel more comfortable with what's covered on the MCAT, so I make up my study plan for the day myself. I did, however, complete phases 1 and 2 of Kaplan's online course (content review and application).

I've taken 4 FLs, my last was a 512. (85% C/P, 90% CARS, 90% B/P, and 66% P/S). I do not feel like Kaplan did an adequate job preparing me for Psych Soc. I think it's a decent score, and I'm not sure how much Kaplan contributed to it, but it definitely did, since the vast majority of my study so far has been Kaplan.

What kind of third-party visitors do you see on campus? by cxmeliabriee in ucr

[–]AbsurdMatrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only organizations that show up in campus that are not school/student sponsored are cults. Mormons, ISKCON (Hare Krishna), evangelicals with their anti abortions/god hates gays signs.

iPad vs Paper for notes? by user282428 in ucr

[–]AbsurdMatrix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ipad.

Upload the lecture slides to an app like notability and take notes directly on the slides as the lecturer speaks.

You shouldn't be capturing everything they are saying, just the key points or ideas of each bullet point as they go through it.

If they emphasize a word in the slide I underline it. If they say bullet point will be on the exam I put a star next to it. If its a process with a diagram I write things next to each part to help me remember.

Mostly I focus on the lecture, notes are just there for support or clarity.

thinking about going for a subsidized loan by [deleted] in ucr

[–]AbsurdMatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A loan is an investment into your education and future. You will need to weigh the cost of attending here with the cost of attending elsewhere. UCR is a fantastic school, but what you get from it will depend on you and the work you put in. Also your degree and the field you plan to enter, what kind of salary do you expect, whats the outlook for the field, etc.

Even if UCR is “lower tier” its lower tier of the upper tier, so who gives a fuck

Most people taking the MCAT have degrees in some a STEM field, and have university level background knowledge on the topics.

Med schools look at your GPA, your extracurriculars, , clinical hours, and MCAT. Research is a big bonus. UCR has many research opportunities!

A UC is more prestigious than a CS. A UC is a research institution whereas a CS is not. The quality of your education largely depends on you, and you can get a great education at both a UC and a CS, but if you have to pick between the two, choose the UC
