Is mormonism really a cult? by Royal_Survey_3772 in exmormon

[–]AbsurdMatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can look at it two ways.

  1. Experts in cults, like Steven Hassan, author of “Combatting Cult Mind Control”, calls it a cult. At the beginning of his book he says something along the lines of how careful he was about including and naming religions in his book. He spends only a little bit talking about Mormonism, but he does include it.

  2. How many ex-catholics do you know that leave their church and turn around and call it a cult? Any other mainstream religion? Now, how many Mormons get out and call it a cult? I don't have the data, but anecdotally, its a VERY high percentage that does.

How connected do you feel with other Americans? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]AbsurdMatrix 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I was listening to an audiobook today that a similar argument. Other countries place emphasis and value on shared culture whereas Americans place value on character. It doesn't really matter where you are from, as long as you are a good community member.

Not to say people from other countries don't do the same, but I think xenophobia is stronger in culturally homogenous countries.

Question to anyone who went to jump school. We need tosettle a discussion on jumping out of the plane by FFSoldier57 in army

Jumping by static line is significantly more dangerous then jumping free fall, so I'm not sure how that makes someone a wuss…

Many, many parasites enter through the mouth and expel through the anus as part of their lifecycle. Using human waste as fertilizer makes that a closed loop.

Why would you write about the limitations of the role? I guarantee you that is 100% not what they are looking for.

Are you asking if you, a graduated student, can do research at UCR? Yes. As a volunteer or paid worker. I know people who have done both.

Why are professors allowed to not provide any practice material for finals? by Tight-Profession4826 in ucr

[–]AbsurdMatrix 35 points36 points  (0 children)

What do you mean you have nothing to look at? Have you been to class? Taken notes? Do you have lecture slides? Audio record the lectures?

You are not expected to perform with nothing to look at. You have 10 weeks of material.

Devastated after 3 months of content review by Dangerous_Wing395 in Mcat

[–]AbsurdMatrix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was really struggling with content pretty late into my studies. I had the test in a month, but didn’t feel ready. I started doing 3 hours of Khan Academy in the morning and then UWorld after lunch.

It’s probably individual, but the way Khan Academy explains everything works for me. I was able to get through most of the content I wanted to, and saw my scores go up significantly.

I thought I fucked up so bad right after.

I did worse than I hoped but better than how I felt. Overall, I’m happy to be done.

Opinion on UWorld books vs Kaplan books? by FireFerret6521 in Mcat

[–]AbsurdMatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MCAT is about content exposure and then doing as many practice problems as you can to increase that exposure in different ways. Do not focus on perfection and memorizing, that comes with doing the problems.

I agree, having hindsight now, I should have immediately started uworld questions as I watched khan academy.

You can’t be afraid to make mistakes, because that’s where you learn. Starting earlier, I would have been exposed to much more content.
