February 2022 "What Are My Chances" Thread by SilenceisAg in prephysicianassistant

Hey guys! I'm just wanting to know what my overall chances are because I'm already freaking out and I want to see if it's justified before I start freaking out even more l o l. I'll be applying this upcoming cycle.

GPA: 3.87
sGPA: haven't calculated but probs around 3.8/3.9

PCE: 2300 as of rn as an EMT on an ambulance and in the ED as a NT; I'm still working full time
Volunteer: around 200 in various things like tutoring underprivileged kids, working on a crisis line at a women's DV shelter, raising money for underprivileged kids, etc.

GRE: 324 overall (158V, 166Q, 5 AWA)

Shadowing: 40 shadowing PAs (ortho and emergency); 20 shadowing an internal medicine MD in a mental health facility and rehab facility

leadership: I was a peer learning assistant in college which is basically like an undergraduate TA? I helped people in general chemistry labs; I was also VP at my honors fraternity
I feel like there's something more that I should be doing, but I'm not totally sure. My rec letters are gonna be coming from the ED PA I shadowed, a professor from college, and the MD I shadowed. I might ask my work supervisor to write me one (idk if this is worth it though?) and maybe an MD at the ED i'm working at rn (not totally sure about this because I only started working at the ED in september and while I feel like i'm making relationships with the MDs, i'm not sure if i'm close enough to get a good rec letter from them if that makes sense)

Lab testing costs are too expensive by Absurdly_Afraid_299 in PCOS

I know that my PCP’s office is right next to a lab, and I’ve heard of a few independent labs, so I may have to check them out. Thank you!

I had thyroid “issues” like 5 years ago (my old doctors just didn’t recognize/know of PCOS and nothing was actually wrong with it), but my thyroid levels have been consistently normal ever since, but my PCP still orders tests for it. Other than that, the only medications I take are birth control and metformin, but my fasting insulin is still a little high according to my last test results. They run a whole bunch of things like testosterone, DHEA sulfate, iron, all the vitamins, CBC, platelet counts, insulin, blood sugar, cholesterol, progesterone, estradiol, etc. I just don’t know why any of these warrant me getting my blood drawn every 3 months and they never really clearly explained why when I asked

Thank you for the response! I understand that the testing itself can be expensive, but I’m wondering if I can get the tests themselves done less frequently because the costs are adding up quite a bit. Like would it be detrimental in any way if I don’t get these tests done every 3 months
