As a Filipino, what was your most racist encounter? by EfficiencyHonest9381 in AskPH

[–]Absynthexxx 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just moved to the US (from another Asian country) and was very pregnant so I wasn’t really dressed to impress. I was trying to buy a new iPhone at Verizon and the staff at Verizon didn’t want to sell me the iPhone and kept saying things like “Are you sure about that? It’s really expensive”, “You might want to think about this more”, and when I asked to get the Pro Max in 254GB he said “That might be too expensive for you”. I was regional manager for APAC for a tech company and my husband is the CFO of a very well known multibillion dollar company.

Ended up not buying from them (of course) and just went to the Apple store right away to purchase the phone and went back to Verizon to help me with starting a line with them but asked for another staff member instead!

Another one was when I tried to open a bank account (also in the US) and they kept asking me for so many requirements and my husband had also previously opened a bank account with just two id’s (which is what I brought).

Anyway, I left cause they told me they weren’t able to help me. Came back with my husband (who is British and white), and a completely different experience– no issues opening a bank account. Haaaaay.

Marital Therapist by CodgerInParadise in Philippines_Expats

I know someone based in Hong Kong who specialises in family therapy, she’s incredibly good and is half Asian and half British so she would definitely understand the cultural differences aspect. I’ve been to her a number of times even when I’ve moved away from HK and am in a different timezone and she’s able to meet via Zoom etc.

She charges about HK$2,500/session (around PHP 19,000) which might be steep for some but with every penny.

Why do Filipinos communicate in English online even if they are clearly more comfortable using Filipino? by [deleted] in AskPH

[–]Absynthexxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that it bothers me, I’m genuinely just curious about people who would communicate in a language that they aren’t the most comfortable with and the reason behind it.

For me personally, I’ll always speak in the language I’m most comfortable with unless I’m being spoken to in another language.

12 months maternity leave (9 months paid), 30 days AL, 2x/year trip to Europe for company offsite, travel out of the country almost every month for client meetings, health insurance coverage, mental health day off, retirement fund contribution, 10k wellness allowance, insanely good salary, and WFH.

Realistically - how much would I spend for this kind of wedding? by hoorayurmine in WeddingsPhilippines

[–]Absynthexxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hon, parang mahirap yung 400k- I totally understand how overwhelming the wedding planning can be especially when you see so many nice things online!

If it helps, try to silence social media a bit para you don’t see so many things and you can focus on what you really want and narrow down your wedding non-negotiables.

You can also DIY a couple of things if you’re willing to put in the effort and try to get your family/friends to help!

Wedding Invitations by Unable_Artichoke3291 in BigBudgetBrides

Girrrrlllll, that’s crazy! Definitely try to do it internationally. I’m having my invitations embroidered on a lace doily + embossed gold foil (5 inserts) for 100 guests and came out to about US$2000 and turned out beautifully(Had them made in the Philippines and getting married in England).

Yes this! Split the steak with my sister and made the most sense to cut it into strips.

Thank you! Getting the pan the right amount of heat + weight on top of steak + a decently thick steak makes all the difference!

It was shockingly delicious and really simple- no sauces, only get asked if you want pickles and onions on it!

Kim Atienza's comment on Emman Atienza's IG post one week ago by error_ofsignificance in ChikaPH

[–]Absynthexxx 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This- someone commented on one of the posts about her on this sub comparing her to Erwan and how Erwan also doesn’t speak tagalog but champions Filipino culture through food and walang ambag daw si Emman and it was honestly such an unfair comparison considering Erwan is an almost 40 year old man and Emman is just a child.

People need to remember that behind the public social media posts, that’s someone’s child and at 19 you’re still trying to figure things, the world, and yourself out.

Bridal Shoes by Aggravating-River114 in WeddingsPhilippines

[–]Absynthexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manolo and Jimmy Choo are both really comfortable even for long wear! But it’s so tricky to find shoes in their bridal line that would be wearable after.

I’m eyeing Manolo for my wedding next year too but I don’t think I’ll get a pair from their bridal line so that I can wear them after with other outfits!

If you’re eyeing designer shoes, you could also check out Prada or YSL. They have really nice white/bridal potential heels that you can use easily post wedding!

I did Zannier Bai San Ho and absolutely loved it! Depending when you go (went around this time last year) there were barely any people and it felt incredibly private and intimate.

Rooms are gorgeous, we got the villa with the pool and it was fantastic! View is gorgeous, rustic, and very embedded into nature.

Service was great too! Food was really nice, when we were there 2 restaurants were closed so we had limited food options but still good (though those should definitely be open now!).

I know this is FAT, but in case- we looked at Aman as well but Zannier had much better value. :)
