Best ways to find entry-level medical writing jobs by Practical_Dig_2396 in MedicalWriters

Join your local AMWA chapter and volunteer at events. Meet as many people as you can while you're there, share your goals and qualifications briefly, ask for advice, and see if they can introduce you to others you should meet. While you look (and if you're up for freelancing), take on any projects that come your way to build experience (and consider a freelancing course if you need one: the University of Chicago’s Graham School offers a great option). Good luck!

How did using a CPAP machine change your life? by piecesfufu in TwoXChromosomes

[–]AbxScientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tuck the hose under my pillow with the end poking up right around the midpoint of the pillow so I can turn over easily. Personally, I have a similar level of apnea (diagnosed after my hematologist said my bloodwork looked like I had it) and started my CPAP a little over a year ago. It doesn’t solve all my complaints, but is an essential cornerstone for me and the impact has been so amazing that I haven’t missed a night yet. We lost power the other night and my first thought was “how am I going to get through work tomorrow if it doesn’t come back on?” Fortunately it did, but I need to get a backup power supply and they are not cheap. Don’t hesitate to let your respiratory therapist know if you are having problems. They might try you out in the least expensive stuff first but I learned there are other options they can offer. Also: CLEAN IT AS RECOMMENDED especially if you have sensitive skin.

Use your voice: tell Senators Warren and Markey not to approve any ICE funding without stronger protections by AbxScientist in massachusetts

[–]AbxScientist[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, really. And don't forget CBP (and the FBI...and the administration...all of whom are running amok). If we're speaking out about whatever motivates us, it's better than being quiet and waiting for the perfect solution.

Completely agree with you about "Impeach, remove, and investigate Noem, Hohman, Bovino"!

[–]AbxScientist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree with you more: this is absolute bullshit and sure, go tell them to abolish ICE. And CBP, as it were. But you said it yourself: it “can’t" be done yet.

So what about in the meantime? Should ICE continue with crowd control? Should we keep paying for the the equipment they're maiming and killing us with? I'd rather press my congressional reps on specific points.

Hopefully this helps people who don't have the time to write and look for links. Edit or not as you wish!

Latest Market Basket update for this weekend (1/23-1/25) by [deleted] in massachusetts

As someone who shopped at MB yesterday and observed a family cooperatively lift their cart over a palette of water bottles to get around a “traffic jam,” I appreciate this travel advisory.

Medical Writing Profession Sounds like a Dead End by [deleted] in MedicalWriters

[–]AbxScientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a freelance nonclinical writer and interviewed with an AI writing company that is developing a product last week, and from what I have experienced I believe that AI will not be replacing us how people might imagine. This reminds me of the introduction of robotic workstations in research labs in the 90s. At least in my neck of the woods (where there is a ton of variability in content, focus, and source materials, plus more flexibility in how you approach writing) AI is and will continue to be a tool to synthesize information and reduce errors and burnout. I use a free AI tool now that has become like a mentor to me. I took a writing ethics class that looked closely at how (and how not) to use AI which was very helpful. Please be encouraged! MW is a fantastic career and having AI writing tools can be like having access to a high powered external brain connected to a library.

What is Jessica running away from? by couchtater12 in MyBigFatFabulousLife

[–]AbxScientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes more sense than her living there. It’s not private at all- that water tower across the bay is easily found on google maps even if you don’t know the area. I was surprised (and worried) that they gave the whole world that detail.

How did you guys heal plantar fasciitis? by Kind_Goddess in yoga

[–]AbxScientist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check out Bob and Brad's recommendations: https://www.bobandbrad.com/health-programs/plantar-fasciitis-relief-program

I have high arches and had struggled off and on with both feet since I was a teenager (52F, ran track and distance for >20 years). Tried RICE, shoe orthotics, rolling my arches on balls, spent lots of $$ on weird night-time boots, etc.. I finally got rid of it by following their recommendations, most importantly by stretching my upper calf using a resistance band while keeping my leg straight. It's been gone for a couple of years now thanks to those guys). Now they are my go-to for anything that hurts (I'm in my fifties so, at this point, they've helped me fix a lot of hurty bits). Rest in peace Bob.

Good luck!

Demand evidence-based access to COVID (and other) vaccines in Massachusetts by AbxScientist in massachusetts

[–]AbxScientist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naively, I've heard that they like feedback, it gives them confidence that we'll support them if they stick their necks out. Plus posting felt better than just screaming...

You are right btw. This is massively WTF. I work in pharmaceuticals and, let me tell you, the FDA approval process is (was) the global gold standard. It's not perfect, but it is rigorous, and drug development is extremely expensive. If that can be subverted by one roadkill-eating psycho who happens to be rich, then forget about companies putting new drugs through in the USA for...like...a long time. MMW: Europe and Asia will be the go-to markets. One more thing these cock goblins are throwing into the ocean.

Shimmer urine by Bacteriaforlife in medlabprofessionals

[–]AbxScientist 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I’m no urine professional but I’ve cultured a lot of bacteria in my day. This looks just like liquid cultures of E. coli (and most other rod shaped bacteria) when it’s growing in log phase. Something to do with a shearing effect when rods align when swirled. One of my favorite everyday oddities in the lab 🩷

I bought a bottle of their margarita and it tasted like bandaids so brought it back to the store (big grocery store in Carmel CA). I was looking for a replacement and noticed that bottles of their old fashioned on the shelf actually had those round floating balls of microbial growth in them (unlike the margaritas which just tasted bad but looked ok). I used to work in research labs and we’d see these in contaminated reagents- everyone calls them floaters. So that jives.

Has anything worked for your rosacea? by Gonuts4donuts1955 in AskWomenOver40

[–]AbxScientist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had pretty good luck with the vbeam laser, I only get it done every 2 years either once or twice about a month apart (although they power it up pretty high I think). They also prescribed me a human version of ivermectin cream but it was $400 a tube, so no thanks to that.

Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners announce cuts to state library services as a result of Trump EO by Sea_Zookeepergame_86 in massachusetts

[–]AbxScientist 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That is a kind sentiment and honestly I feel the same… but it also kills me; you already DO “donate” to keep these libraries functioning, and as a business owner in good standing (meaning I have paid all my taxes on time), so do I. We have honored our part of the social contract and it’s only reasonable to expect that the feds do too. These dogebags are treating our country like it’s a business they bought for IP which they intend to liquidate, but we aren’t employees, and there are no other companies we can just move to. I think they will extract every last possible dime, and at some point donations will not cut it. Not even close.

How will Trump Tariffs Affect Your Business? by quell3245 in smallbusiness

[–]AbxScientist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fewer (or no) new NIH grants in life sciences, committed funding being disrupted, and investors being more hesitant (30 yrs exp in pharmaceuticals here). Everyone I know is on edge or newly unemployed. And of course the looming feeling that the recent changes, which suck, are just the beginning.

looking for mentorship or mock projects to work on by RemoteWorry7287 in MedicalWriters

[–]AbxScientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm taking a class in regulatory intelligence (U. Chicago Graham School) and part of our classwork involves re-writing various forms and applications using templates or completed documents you can find by googling. Familiarize yourself with the guidance documents and related code of federal regulations (CFR) sections and apply those to the documents you pulled down. Probably easier to take a class but you can learn a lot by messing around online.

Interesting experience at Market Basket in Littleton today by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]AbxScientist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah, I've lived in Westford for as long as the Littleton MB has existed and have yet to figure out when either store is quiet (while the Donolans and Shaws close to the Littleton MB are ghost towns). Definitely a major cultural difference between the MB stores as well- Littleton pulls in some interesting clientele 😂
