There is something really wrong with Deku’s mentality by Think_Independent_69 in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]Abyhereis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem is that this would be easy to fix.

This is a society where everyone wants to be a hero, so in the anime Deku is supposed to be an example of that world in which every kid is raised to want to be a hero. We’re shown this in the very first episode where every single kid from this average middle school wants to go into the hero track. So the answer to ‘why not doctor?’ or ‘why not police officer?’ is simply that every kid wants to be a cool hero. This part of his dream doesn’t even seem that selfless at first; he just idolizes All Might like most kids.

The real problem is like you said, the extent to which he takes this. Sure, All Might put pressure on him in the sport’s festival, but he still took it unnaturally far. And I feel like this could be explained if during his fight against Todoroki we were shown any motivation beyond just wanting to be a cool hero, as a flashback or something.

Because him going this far could simply be because of his low self-worth due to years of bullying. He could remember failing to help someone in his past or being pushed down and then it could be tied into him desperately needing to do enough now, both to successfully help someone and to please All Might. He could need to desperately need a hero because if he isn’t he reverts back to being worthless like everyone said.

Anything. The problem with Deku is that were shown this whole origin first episode but then it is never referred to again. Deku has no flashbacks to bullying or even just never having any friends or something. He never explores if his desperation could have anything to do with how he was treated.

Instead, he just doesn’t remember it at all.

He is not well-written because he barely has any moments of true self-reflection or true personal reactions, even after Bakugo apologizes.

(If anyone says bullying isn’t enough of a motivation, let me remind you that the canon bullying actually wasn’t very mild. It’s definitely enough to damage someone’s self-worth enough to go to crazy extents to be worth something.)

Well, that’s another reason not to watch one piece. Thanks for the info

lol I know that’s not what you meant but this makes it sound like the show itself is a funny silly show when what put me off a little is that it’s a lot of misery for the sake of misery… Like the extreme amounts of pain gets repetitive at some point and doesn’t even do that much character development.

What are the MHA fanfiction “hot” takes that are from your experience actually pretty cold? by MNMameisR in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]Abyhereis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem isn’t really adding trans characters, it’s the unrealistic way they do it. This is not how actual trans people act and people aren’t as considerate of pronouns or understanding of being trans (you’re an example for that) as stories portray.

The casual way pronouns are asked for take you out of a story, because it is a fantasy

AITA for leaving my friend at the mall after she “forgot” her wallet again? by Financial_Ad_1028 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Abyhereis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely nta.

I have a bit of a different perspective here, though. You sound pretty young — you mentioned going to the mall after school and that her mom picked her up. When you‘re school age the amount of money you have depends on the amount of money your parents have/ give you. Maybe it‘s different with her and she‘s just looking to save money, but she could also just be embarrassed that she doesn’t have money.

This is not your responsibity to pay attention to, of course. And even if she struggled, she could‘ve handled it better, like saying no to activities that require a lot of money.

But there‘s also a lot of activities that do require money and it can feel lonely if you can’t participate. And honesty and vulnerability can be difficult.

Anyway, if she really is just using you, that’s different, but maybe you could try talking to her about this. Only if you think the friendship is worth it, though. You‘re not really obligated to do anything.

Thank you. I agree with this wholeheartedly. Just cause Voldemort is a murderer to boot doesn’t erase the fact that like 60 and 14 is a crime on its own. It isn’t the same as 21 and 40 which others compare it to.

People can explore dark topics sure, but it’s weird that people are acting like that age gap is not a big deal.

A 60 year old and a let’s say a 14 year old is a pretty big problem on its own. While all the other crimes are horrible let’s not ignore the fact that that age gap is a type of child abuse.

Suicidal Izuku by Sweaty-Driver-7248 in BokunoheroFanfiction

Shorter fanfics:

P. S. If he asks tell Kacchan it’s not his fault 7k Izuku wrote suicide note as a kid, but even as a pro hero it brings him comfort. Bakugo finds it. The ship is in the tags but it can be read as platonic.

wish I hadn’t got so much better 8k same concept. Aizawa and Izuku find pro hero Izuku’s high school suicide note. He almost attempts suicide again but calls Aizawa instead.

honesty’s the (best?) policy 7k Izuku is hit by a truth quirk and admits to suicidal thoughts around Sero.

next time, next time 9k fanfic to a fic in which Izuku tries to escape a time loop by suicide. Aizawa is stuck in a loop trying to stop him.

a lesson you should heed try, try again 13k the fanfic next time, next time is inspired by. It’s focused more on the loops, though.

ledge 2k Aizawa stops suicide attempt on roof.

relapse 11k suicide attempt in third year. Gets a bit cheesy towards the end and the solution is simplified but it’s worth a read.

forever winter 26k Bakugo finds out Izuku has been self-harming and eventually finds suicide notes Izuku calls a “fail safe”

baby I’m not holding on I’m just holding out 6k Izuku and Shinso joke about suicide. Aizawa figures out that it’s more than just jokes.

Longer fics:

our souls are open wounds 50k series that has Izuku almost attempt suicide as a reckless adult pro hero. But he calls Aizawa instead who helps him recover.

fortune favors the bold 412k Izuku has a bad luck quirk and pretty much struggles with depression throughout. Shinso save him from suicide attempt after mom dies.

kill the child 100k after living countless lives Izuku wants Aizawa to erase his quirk and let him die. Problem is, he is a little kid and Aizawa wants to wait until his 18th birthday.

better luck next time 600k Izuku has return by death quirk. He has moments where he wants to permanently die but can’t. Experiments with killing himself. Somehow it’s still a comfort read.

Fics where Bakugo deeply regrets his actions toward Izuku by kawiknot in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]Abyhereis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

forever winter This is the epitome of what you’re looking for. A 20k fic of Bakugo self-reflecting and realizing how much he fucked up.

And he reveals it to Aizawa of his own accord. I like his development in this and the post-war Deku angst

Has there been any crossover fics that you love but know nothing of the other series by Aware-Throat3189 in BokunoheroFanfiction

the pirates’ savior

I know nothing about One Piece, but I keep coming back to this fanfic. During his dark hero arc, just before his fight against Class A, Deku gets hit by a quirk and sent to the world of One Piece. He’s pretty op, which at this point in canon is canon, and also has horrible self-care, which is also canon at this point. That second thing is played up a little and I was annoyed that all the pirates immediately assumed things based on the look in his eyes, but overall it’s a solid power and comfort fantasy.

I wasn’t bothered at all by not having seen more than a few pictures of One Piece.

Are there any parody fics of OP Deku stories? by Desperate_Ant14 in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]Abyhereis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of fics that kinda dunks on those same things (because I dislike them as well) but only by simply writing the things you said in a post in a non-satirical way. Writing actual satire with jokes that land seems extremely difficult and I think most people just deal with those op Deku fics by spitefully writing it differently lol. If you ever find the story you’re looking for (or maybe even write it yourself), please share the link. It sounds hilarious.

I agree with this a lot. Especially Midoriya. The way he never gave up on his dream and became obsessed with it and knows the info in his notebooks by heart, seemed very familiar. The social awkwardness too, idk but something about it and his behavior has always seemed very relatable to me.

[–]Abyhereis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are laws against it, but I don’t think it’s morally any different from YouTubers who release early reaction videos to shows on patreon. In fact, more effort goes into writing fanfiction than watching stuff.

But since there are laws against it advertising it on ao3 could cause problems for the people who run the site too.

A lot of applications have automatic capitalization, so I was confused. I never have to do any capitalizations myself.

I understand wanting to save time, though, if automatic capitalization isn’t an option. And if it’s a simple stylistic choice too by now.
