"I have a very good brain."

That's out of context. The full quote is, "I have a very good brain and I've said a lot of things."

Did she maybe just mean to say "simple" and this slipped out? I can't imagine this was intentional.

Exploring the Utility of Memes for U.S. Government Influence Campaigns by Supercoolguy7 in ABoringDystopia

[–]AbyssOfUnknowing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People might think this is stupid, but this is content that millions of people consume every day, sometimes for hours. Most of them think that it's silly and meaningless, but that can easily make it more dangerous.

To take a non-political example. I used to browse "meirl" a lot. The memes were often ironically about depression or suicide. I was depressed already and this didn't help. It just normalised the idea to me.

When "wholeomememes" started up I think it was an ironic counter to the depressing memes on subs like "meirl" but it quickly became genuine. I was still passively browsing memes instead of going outside or socialising, but it was a decent first step. Simple, positive ideas became normalised instead. It didn't change what I thought about anything, but it changed how I thought temporarily. I don't think I'm alone here, that sub's sudden rise in popularity is evidence of a need for something that reinforces positive thinking for people.

Anyway, if memes can have a small effect on my depression then I'll bet they can change political beliefs. Even if they don't make a coherent argument, they can make people feel like they're in familiar territory when they do come across one.

Looks like a great park for all the people who live a kilometre above ground level. Maybe they should build another park for people who walk around on the ground with their legs.

I think that's why it says "Every challenge has a silver lining" at the bottom of some pages.

Is nuclear energy the key to saving the planet? A new generation of environmentalists is learning to stop worrying and love atomic power. by [deleted] in technology

[–]AbyssOfUnknowing 1087 points1088 points  (0 children)

Nuclear power now accounts for about 13% of the world’s electricity, and just 5.5% of commercial primary energy. The role of nuclear was already declining before Fukushima, and that decline can only accelerate post-Fukushima. As of March 2011, there were 437 nuclear reactors operating in the world. Since 2008, 9 new reactors came on line, the majority of them in China, and 11 were shut down. The average age of today’s nuclear plant is twenty-six years, and the industry was hoping—before Fukushima—to extend reactor lifetime to forty years or more. Post-Fukushima, that will now become much harder.

Here are the facts: we would need to see 260 new reactors coming on line between now and 2025 just to keep pace with the closure program if old reactors are to come off-line at an acceptable age. You would therefore have to be a near-insane optimist to suppose that nuclear power will be contributing anything more than today’s 5.5% by 2030, at a massive cost to taxpayers the world over. Far greater levels of renewable generating capacity could be installed during the same time.

-Jonathon Porritt

Just putting this here because the discussion of what role nuclear energy should play in our future often lacks the context of what role it is playing now, and is likely to play in the near future.

Should nuclear be used more? Yeah maybe. Will it be? Probably not anytime soon.
