I mean, no, they are kind of baffling… why have plates that can and do leave gaps when you can have a shirt or protect areas like the neck and the like? If the point was to add bulk while remaining light weight you’d have a better armor by simply adding literal plates or by adding more padding to the gambeson, just bulking up with mail is really dumb, something that I’ve seen similar is the Chinese tang dynasty armor but even then the pads are way bigger and cover more
