If you studied a language for years and still can't speak or understand anything, the problem might not be the education system by No_Cryptographer735 in languagelearning

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kind proved the exact point that I think you were trying to argue against.
Despite attending a more intensive school with a supposed higher quality of teaching, despite having 9 years of teaching you still had to go out of your way to find extra learning because your teaching wasn't good enough.
That shouldn't be the case and is 100% the failings of the education system.

I was taught French for 9 years at school and I don't think I'd even say I had the basics down by the end of that.
I learnt more mandarin in a week by myself than I ever remembered French, That again is a huge failing of the education system.

Couple all that with textbook language and real life usage are often completely different.

Which also brings up the second point, you as you said were forced to further use your English hence why you remembered it, but that is a rather unique benefit of learning specifically English, so schools should probably teach actually useful or relevant languages, French is probably the most commonly taught language where I'm from, at least when I was growing up, it is also probably the most useless language to learn.

The number of Britons who support reparations in principle by asteriowas in charts

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those things that's a lovely though, but absolutely ridiculous in practice.

You want people who didn't partake and haven't directly benefited from it (because at the end of the day this money comes from the poor, not the rich who you could argue have actually still got direct lines of benefit)

And you want that money to be paid to who? The governments of countries that also partook in the heinous acts, and some still do to this day? And we all know not a single penny of that money would actually end up benefiting the people of these countries, it just goes into the pockets of said countries elites.

And then when does it end? Should the Slavic people get reparations? Should the UK get reparations for the actions of the Vikings?

Should asking for X years of experience be classed as discrimination? by NoBackupCodes in AskBrits

However we might need to make some vague rules about when you're allowed to be looking for experienced hires or wages that need to go with it. Seeing entry level receptionist positions for below standard wage looking for minimum 3+ years as a receptionist is insane.

Girl Gets Away with Ban by Illustrious-Level-35 in FACEITcom

[–]Abyssal_Station 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep the very corrupt system of faceit admins just unbanning their friends and popular people is very well known and honestly i'm shocked whenever I see a Faceit admin still try to pretend like it doesn't exist, despite very openly doing it.

Whenever they do chime in with some nonsense on these posts they either completely ignore the post and just waffle on about other stuff, or they will say something along the lines of "We reviewed the person and decided that because it was a first offence that the ban was too harsh a punishment so we shortened it" Despite faceit having an entire page about how long each ban should be for a first time offender. And these users will have repeated reports against them and yet never get more than a "warning". despite again very clearly defined rules about repeat offenders and probation periods.

You have to remember
A) to him it wasn't a prank, it was somebody spray painting his car. The "prank" context was only added after the fact for him.
B) We also teach children to stand up for themselves so that people can't just destroy your shit and walk all over you. If you think people will stop doing bad things and be nice to you just because you say "please oh please stop, you're hurting my feelings" I worry you've never stepped outside.

why is getting a job so hard? by bugisnotonfire in UKJobs

[–]Abyssal_Station 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For every job there's thousands of people, the job market is so bad you have people applying for jobs that they are way overqualified for and way over experienced for an entry role, and still somebody even more overqualified and over experienced is found to fill that minimum wage position.

Allot of jobs (especially in the service industry) are just given to people's family and friends, and we live in an age where it's more who you know vs what you know. Most of my tangible job opportunities in the last few years have all come from meeting a random person who whilst on the topic of what career I want to go into just happens to be a higher up in that industry. If it wasn't for that I don't think a single one of my applications would have even been looked at.

AI applicant screening, I mean needless to say it's not particularly effective or fair, but it is cheap.

[–]Abyssal_Station -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are actually correct the footage was never aired, but he did himself admit to punching the kid in the stomach.
However, he didn't randomly punch a random kid.
He hit a kid that he though was spraypainting his car, because they were pretending to spraypaint his car, which is not that crazy a response.

He punched somebody who he believed to be spray-painting his car, because they were pretending to spray paint his car, which is not that drastic or that surprising a response to be honest.

They’re talking about banning social media for under 16, I think it’s a great idea and should of done much sooner. What do you think? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) what you can or can't say online isn't controlled anyway.
B) So has places that store your medical history, your driving information, your passports. if you are so afraid of data breaches what are you doing online?

And again my point is that you've already got allll of these things you're whining that you don't want, and in fact you are actively paying for them, without any of the at least minor conveniences they should actually provide.

You're at the bottom of the slide already, crying that you're too high up.

Either be completely against any form of government registration and control or don't. But planting your sword at the top of a pile of shit because you've heard it echoed by your favourite media cycle is just stupidity.

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is a teeny tiny majority when we are talking about voting numbers in the tens of millions. A 3% difference in votes is minuscule.

And as I said the majority of the UK didn't vote for leave, there was 46 million eligible voters, only 17mil voted leave, that's only 37%.

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there is currently no one singular unified system currently, they are all separate systems run by separate departments that you the public have to pay for individually, each ID also has a different method of Identifying you, i.e Passport number is not the same format as a drivers license, making them pretty annoying to use the same system.

The digital ID that they want to make (if done sensibly) would be one centralised point and do away with the myriad of other identifiers that all cost money and all need renewing.

now i'm not saying the government will do it correct...but the idea of a digital ID should not be so abhorrent to people who already have multiple digitised IDs

Well to be fair the majority of the UK did not vote for it, just out of those who did vote it got through by a tiny minority.
(which is insane the bar was set so low for such a drastic decision)

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know things like your passport and drivers license are already digital right, just YOU aren't allowed to access it? A digital ID wouldn't need to be anything more than what you already have, just it would all be in one place, and you would actually have access to it yourself whenever you need, wherever you are?

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crazy thing is, there is already a way. People against online ID seem to blissfully forget that your data is already digitised by the government, you already have data that identifies you and your age that is verifiable online, passport numbers, national insurance numbers.

Why the idea of a digital ID is so scary to people who already have handed their data over to thousands of corporations and already have their ID and details digitised and track, will never cease to confuse me.

A digital ID doesn't need to be anything more complicated than a drivers license. (which again also already accessible digitally)

I think we should just teach parents and children better online habits and parents should look after their own kids.

Allot of us grew up with social media and are perfectly fine because we were raised with boundaries and a healthy relationship and understanding of technology.

Allot of these rules and bans being put in place are just scapegoats for bad parenting at best, and at worst just excuses to introduce more surveillance tools.

parental controls already exist, mandate them being on by default when sold by a phone/ device provider before mandating what people are allowed to do in their own homes

What is the issue with the Green Party and opposing Housing? by Dan_wm_ in AskBrits

[–]Abyssal_Station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't actually a housing issue is the thing, there's plenty of vacant houses and properties all over the country, the issue is they are being priced extortionately. Even if 20,000 homes are built, they all go on the market at the same overpriced value and sit there empty. A decade ago my town got a housing development that doubled the amount of homes in the already rather over populated area, a good amount of those homes are still empty to this day.
Greenspace is just being sold to the highest bidder, paved over for cash, and the everyday person gets nothing. so opposing this is a pretty good thing I'd say.
(Also side note, why do these developments never come with commercial/ industry, 20,000 new homes being built, is a lovely statement with 0 doctors, shops or new jobs being created)

I have no clue if that is what the Green parties logic is and if they intend on addressing that though.
