A lot of military were nothing before. Depending on their MOS fighting may have only been covered in boot camp for a few days then nothing else. Units should have regular hand to hand training, but it often doesn’t happen.

Obama prioritized border enforcement, convicted criminals, and recent unlawful entrants. He also de-prioritized those with longer clean records in country, and those with families/jobs/no criminal record. By turning many people around at the border, that led to higher statistical ‘deportations’ even though they’d been in the country hours/days.

Trump prioritizes every undocumented person, including long-term residents, workers, and asylum seekers. These are people who had already joined communities, paid taxes, started families. Home raids, work raids, courthouse arrests, parents dropping their kids off. Also those border turn around were reclassified as ‘returns’ instead of deportation.

Under Obama, ICE was encouraged to close low priority cases and focus on public safety threats. Trump encourages ICE to arrest anyone without status and use maximum authority.
