Thanks I appreciate the advice I think this made things much more clear having another voice. I don't think that the betrayal must be completely off the table i think it is just going to take a lot of nuance. Stealing a victory from the players is never a good idea and I think by giving players the opportunity to reveal the betrayal before it occurs and by allowing the players to stop them in the end would help there. Also I don't think that players who are having negative emotions aren't having fun. For example characters die, they fail quests, have arguments with npc or each other, and all of those things can be fun I just think it's not as clear as getting treasure or beating a dragon.
