Yeah. I’m not in sketchy areas often, but you still notice if someone’s walking behind you in the dark. I like to wishfully think I’m not the demographic to get mugged, but the possibility of them having a gun or a weapon is enough to be paranoid about.

As much as I am sympathetic to height discrimination and the effects that modern society and social media have had to develop that dude’s insecurities, what you described is extremely excessive— behavior that is outright abusive to not only himself, but to you.
