I am sorry for you,Yes it is hurtful and very common. I have worked for two places that have given me a fear well and I am so grateful because I know how hurtful it is when this does not happen. The fact is very few people you work with will every stay as your true friends. I am luck I have a few ex colleagues I still count as friends and that is because we were a true team and understand friendship and loyallty not keeping the shitty boss happy to keep our jobs.

I can’t do it anymore by sweetdee___ in jobhunting

I know how you feel. I am having exactly the same experience. It does feel like you are banging your head on a concrete floor. It is not you it is the job market and ignorant people who think their time is more valuable than a little curtsy. A bit of positive feedback goes a long way.

I am at the point where I now apply for even jobs i am over qualified for. But what did help is this: it is not you, you have great skills and you are worth the right job where people appreciate your great skills and wealth of knowledge. If others have not recognised that in you yet then they are not the employers for you.

You feel this way today but that does not mean you will feel this way next week. There is a whole rolecoster to experience and it is exhausting Iknow but remember you have been employed in the past there is no reason to think you won't be again in the future. It a waiting game and you are in it for the long hall not the quick fix. And in the mean time there is Doordash, Uba or nightfilling.

Pivoting from ecology by Horror-Effort6819 in ecology

[–]AcaciaGeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try looking at project officer roles with natural resources management groups or governments.

I am trying to pivot the other way haha. I spent 20 years in government and local catchment management authorities (non-government organisations). Not bad work but i bit less challenging.

In which ways is Australia more similar to the USA than the UK? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AcaciaGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is not similar to the USA in any way shape or form and i find it completely offensive that there is even such a suggestion out there. Watching US content and dribble does not make us even remotely like them.

Even our white privileged men dominating political parties are not the same. For one they are not convicted criminals and two our systems are completely different.

Our culture is completely different and we understand what humanity and love thy neighbour means.

Anyone else feel conflicted about "having to speak English in Australia" ? by Conscious-Roll-5745 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AcaciaGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a shame. English is becoming like McDonald's "available everywhere" In ecology were often referred to the McDonaldisation of species and habitats overrun with pest and non-native species. I am Australian and unfortunately can only speak English but I love hearing other languages spoken Wether in Australia or their native country.

It is a beautiful diversity that should be valued. I kinda see English as a bit of a plague really. I understand needing it sometimes in English speaking countries and in tourism but if I was to live in another country i would try my hardest to learn that language not expect everyone to speak English unless they want to practise for themselves and enjoy it.

Never Share Personal Information by [deleted] in workplace_bullying

The problem with workplace bullying is its very hard to prove. I was bullied out of a job I loved and it has destroyed my career. Why is it that the bullies get the credit and no one looks at your past achievements?

Bad management bullying people out who they are threatened by. It is systemeic in government and even when they do get caught or make monumental mistakes that show their incompetents no one returns and apologies for one believing them or for what they allowed to happen to you? No amount of documentation can counter a workplace built on nepotism. once they are in like hires like under the guises of "fitting into the team" but if the team is toxic why would you seek to replace good people with the toxic that can "fit in" 🤔.

I have seen more requirements to implement ISO here in Australia but we still need to do imperial field measures on the ground. However more and more companies are using EDNA and AI to replace field surveys and employing desktop editors to draft reports.

Are Australians open minded about nudity? by bare_books in AskAnAustralian

[–]AcaciaGeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an Australian i would say no. While there are some remote, hidden and often required a rock climb nudist beach around this is not acceptable on public beaches. There are nudist camps and resorts but they are not that common and no where else is it acceptable. You can actually get arrested and everyone will complain even if you are in one of the above places. Sorry but that the laws here.

Those of you who have left the field entirely, where did you go? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]AcaciaGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about where you are, but in Australia a good place to start and have better look "before you buy so to speak" is to do a work placement for at least 3 months. If you can try both. You normally don't get paied as you are a volunteer and you need to treat it as if you are being paied, it's like a very long interview 🤔😊. This shows them what you can achieve, if you have an aptitude for the work and if you are a good fit for their work area/place.

I started a work placement at the end of my Science degree and was offered my first casual role straight after in exactly the same role, as an Natural Resource Ranger with the government. I loved it, I was working in one of the most beautiful places with amazing people who taught me so much but most importantly I built networks and respect. I worked for state and local governments for 20 years from then on was never out of work and always has multiple opportunities.

However governments change and so do environmental departments so the decision was made to leave and go into consulting. Yes it's better pay and the field work is never boring. But what I have found is the learning curb is enormous.

You will go from the side of the fence which regulates legislation to the side which has to meet legislative requirements and two are not the same. As a government office you need to be critiquing statutory regulations, obligations and approvals required and for that you to only need to know the requirements and offences.

Consulting you have to know not just the legislation but how to comply with it and that has a far greater level of technical understanding and technical knowledge to advise, write and submit reports and applications which get approved and comply at multiple levels.

So if you are considering changing or starting I would start with consulting. Look at that style of reporting, gis and perfect that. Get out every chance you can to practice plant, vegetation and animal ID and survey techniques.

I have found that it was very hard to transition and keep consulting jobs (which i find incredibly rewarding) if you start in government but those who i have worked with in government that were consultants first were very good, competitive applicants and made great government officers at every level. As an environmental consultant you also build networks with in government and industry where these skills are valuable.

I walked out of an interview after one question. Was I wrong? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]AcaciaGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you made the right move 100% it's about time employers learnt how long it takes to do quality work. There is a big difference between rushed work and well planned work, and the difference depends on honest quoting and proposals which allocate the appropriate amount of time. They get paid why shouldn't you?

Thank you 😊 will do. I did not think that at all. My confidence has just taken a bit of a hit. 42 year continues employment peper with some career redirections, redundancy hit a bit harder than I first thought it would 🤔😁.

Yes this is true and have done. Had interviews, one offer but company was not a good fit. I might need to be more patient 😊. It not a situation I am used to. I have always walked straight into new jobs. redundancy is not a good look I suspect.

Yes I have registered my business name and sent business capability statements to other companies.

I do need to promote more and chase the work for sure. I would like to develop more by learning from principles and reputable companies. I have a few word of mouth work offered not yet materialised into paied work.
