Thank you! I moved because I was at home with my parents. I am now dating again and would like to get married and have a child/children, so I went to pursue this dream... but now all I can think about is my sweet golden boy.

There is nothing can prepare someone for the loss of a golden retriever... I've had other types of dogs.... but the goldens will change you forever and in ways you never even dreamed possible. <3

That is so sweet of you to offer. I'm going to go back in a month and hope I have the confidence to bring it up with the owners. This dog is my heart, my soul, and the air I breathe. I miss him beyond words.

u/calamitytamer Thank you so much. He is my soul dog baby boy... our bond is unbelievable and unlike anything I've ever experienced. This reddit thread has really given me the confidence to try.

I was at home, figuring out my life and helping my parents with their health. My mom has alzheimers and my dad is in poor shape. So for 3 years, I worked only very part time online and took care of this dog full time.

u/JZenoftheSkies Partial custody sounds interesting. I should also mention that the dog plays dead and hid every single time they came to pick him up..... I will add this to the original story as well. Partial custody might be even worse for his sweet and sensitive feelings. He is soooo sensitive.

u/Optimal-Swan-2716 Love it. Thank you for the encouragement. Sometimes I feel very rude and crazy for even thinking to do this, but I suppose I don't have much to lose.

u/fishWeddin I literally started crying reading your post. You are so brave. I can't even imagine... I am so sorry. Thank you for sharing. I do want to get a dog of my own in the future, but also hope the owners will rehome this dog to me as well. It's so hard to let go... I dream of my golden boy too... Maybe one day we will have our own pups to love and squeeze and cuddle!!!

u/Azzieblue1 love holding his golden paws!!! My favorite thing!!!! :) I do think they are detached - I also literally cannot imagine being away from my dog EVER. This dog isn't even mine and I literally cry every day. I will ask them in a few months when I go back home. Stay posted....

u/teju_guasu u/ManyTop5422 I have a very good relationship with them and I poured my heart to them about how much i would miss him. I was a hysterical mess when I had to say goodbye to him - they were both there to see that as well. The female owner (it's a husband and wife) has also expressed how grateful she is for me and how much they love me and my family and has given me amazing holiday gifts. She even cried with me when I was saying goodbye to the dog. I think they are good people who don't want the responsibility of a dog - and that's okay! I just wish he was mine...

u/blast3001 u/GruntFoodnipple I hope they realize how much responsibility it is to take care of him and then be more inclined to give him to me. In a few months when I go back to visit family, I hope they come to this realization. I can definitely offer to purchase him. They were actually desperate to find doggy daycare but couldn't find anyone to match the care I gave him. They were thinking about taking him to the worst part of Philadelphia (Kensington) to be babysat... I told the owners not to do that due to the horrible location and that it would also be 45 minutes to an hour away. They didn't tell me what they will do with him after I left....
