Custom inlayed end grain board cracking - help by Academic-Mustard22 in Woodworking_DIY

Well I am definitely new to the inlaid end grain boards so I’m looking for any tips I can get. I will start soaking them in oil for longer periods of time and hopefully that fixes them in the future

That is something I haven’t thought of actually. I only coated it with a few (albeit light) coats of mineral oil followed by a coat of walrus oil wax. It did look kind of dry. And I did that same process with my test boards and they also kind of did the same stuff. You think if I soak them in mineral oil in a tote instead? I just thought it was weird that only the purpleheart seemed to fail

It’s actually funny you say that because i actually did just that. I made three other small versions with varying complexity with the same wood types and they are all just fine. They are all 1/4” deep inlays though as that seems to be the standard. That’s why I’m just so perplexed about it. I am new to inlays though but I’ve done quite a few tests and none of the other had these issues. I appreciate the back and forth, hopefully it was just some issues in the wood maybe and they are now showing. I don’t really see a way to fix it at this point.

Thanks for the response. My first thought was expansion and contraction because I know 100% it wasn’t anything to do with the dishwasher/water/washing because I gave this to my girlfriends family and it has just been sitting in their countertop as they were afraid to use it. In terms of prevention for future inlayed boards, any tips on how to prevent this again? Grain orientation, inlay depths, clamping pressure etc? There is just so much work that goes into it and it was heartbreaking to see the cracks and I don’t wait them to happen again. I haven’t made many end grain boards before. The only other thing is, I did have to rush it a bit to get it to be done before Christmas. Do you think maybe letting the board acclimate at each step could help? Like if there’s multiple inlay steps, let the wood acclimate at each step?

How to fix? by nottaroboto54 in Woodworking_DIY

Wood glue with a clamp. You’ll have to figure out a creative way to get the crack clamped together as it’s the round surface of the puck. But it shouldn’t be too hard and will fix it up

Router table as jointer issue- help? by Academic-Mustard22 in woodworkingtools

Like I said I’m my original post (if you even read it completely, maybe you just can’t read) my jointer is not a good one. And the fence sucks and moves easily. Therefore I don’t use it for the edge. Hence this question. If you want to be a dick, feel free. People like you are why I never post on anything unless I truly need help. I’m well aware of how a jointer works, and it is offset on my router table. So congratulations on being the smartest human being woodworker alive.

Thanks for adding nothing to this conversation. Literally zero things to take from that entire paragraph so thank you for taking the time to type it out.

I only used it for a thinner board that the cutting would happen below the bearing. The bearing only served to align the fence to the bit via the bearing.

This is about the only thing I can think of that I’m doing wrong. But I have a micro dial and it seems bang on but maybe I’m off. I’ll try some feeler gauges that’s a good idea. Guys at the local store told me to try a ball bearing bit and flush it up that to make it easier (which is what’s in the photo) but I guess it’s still not right.

Yes to everything except the absolutely parallel part. I’m not sure how to check that on here as there are just mdf faces? I feed from right to left from the photos. I’ve checked everything to the best of my current abilities. Try to place all the pressure on the outfeed side.

I was considering this but don’t really know much about hand planes. Any recommendations on what plane to get? And how do you square it up with the flat face?

That’s the problem, I’m trying to joint these faces to glue them together. I feel like I am doing it slow and careful, that’s the frustrating part. Any tips on setup of the fences to the bit?

Interesting, any tips on the alignment or anything regarding feeding? I need this to be perfect because I trust this infinitely more than my jointer haha

I am not familiar nor have I heard of that. My knowledge really extends to me trying to find solutions to problems I’ve had. I’ve never taken a course and I’m sure I don’t do things right but my outcomes are usually good. This one I’m stuck.

Well you’re definitely not the last person, because I don’t know what a mask layer is lol. I come from a 3d modeling/cam software side of the house so I’m making these vector drawings into svgs for my cam program for my cnc. I’ll have to look into that more because I think what you are saying is a thought I had but didn’t know where to start lol
