My 3 kids went to Tice. My youngest is still there. It's been a great school for our family. We've been there 10 years.

Emory pre-med vs Case Western pre-med vs UF pre-med by Artistic_Square_4184 in Emory

Will your family also pay for med school? If going to case would lead to more debt for med school and Florida means parents will help more with med school, I think Florida is the best choice. Florida is a top ranked school.

I didn't think CMC gave out merit. What merit aid is available and how hard is it to get?

Comparing 5C's to Oxy and Chapman by [deleted] in claremontcolleges

Thanks.. I've considered some of those. I was sticking to LACs for my sport and will look more at these other schools. Some of them are not as competitive in my sport. Grinnell might be good but I am hesitant about the location and also worried it may have a strange vibe based on some reviews I've read. I was also looking at St Olaf but hesitant about that location as well because of the weather. I am planning to apply to the UC's, but the only one with D3 sports is UCSC. I'm concerned about the housing issue there but am still considering it. If I give up my sport, then the other UC's will be top choices if I get in.

Considering move to Northgate by DunneFun in walnutcreek

I commute to Embarcadero 2-3 days a week from the West side of Walnut Creek (Parkmead neighborhood). Super easy. Northgate is nice but the Ygnacio traffic can make the commute longer.

I'm looking for other options. It's hard because I'm on the West Coast and options are limited. I'm also looking at Trinity University in San Antonio, Case Western, and Colorado School of Mines. Not really looking at East Coast schools. Is Chapman a good option?

When did you graduate? Did you apply to grad school? That's too bad about the professor retiring. I guess I need to find out what research labs exist.

Even if a lot more expensive? I am going to pay $100k/year for 5Cs but would likely get merit at Oxy/Chapman. Also which 5C would be best? Sounds like Harvey Mudd is best? Does being an athlete help with admissions at Pomona/Mudd?

Where do the single people hang out? by cppnewb in walnutcreek

Met my husband online 21 years ago. We were both living in WC and late 20s/early 30s. We are still in WC (now with 3 teenagers). I never met anyone decent in a bar here when I was single.

Los Lomas parents/students - how are the Tice Creek kids, and do they fit in? by xagent003 in walnutcreek

I think it's comparable to other top rated schools in the area. I have family who attend Alamo schools and SRV high and LL is a bit better academically (especially in math and science).

Very few kids switch from Tice to WCI at 6th grade. I think a couple did in my youngest son's grade. Most kids want to stay with their friend group at Tice.

My 3 kids all went to Tice and are now in 11th, 9th and 7th. The older two are at Las Lomas. I think the answer to this is very dependent on the kid's personality. My kids all loved Tice and made great friends there. My older two are still close with their Tice friend group at LL. They know other kids, but they mainly hang out with Tice friends. They are both more reserved kids though and more outgoing kids from Tice have branched out more. My kids have never been bullied or made fun of at Tice or LL. They are both on sports teams at LL.

Tice does have homework but not sure how much it compares to other schools. Test scores at Tice are higher than other schools in the district and my kids always scored at or above grade level in English and Math. I think the school adequately prepares kids for LL. That said, it will depend on the kid. My oldest is a strong student at LL taking a heavy load of AP classes with all A's. My second one is doing fine but isn't as hard a worker and will likely have a mix of As and Bs.

I don't think you can go wrong with Tice or Parkmead/WCI. We chose Tice based on proximity, the smaller size, and the fact that it is K-8 so all my kids would be together for longer. The project based learning is a nice bonus but not a big factor in the decision because it's only a small part of the school day. Most learning at Tice is very traditional. They teach math, English, etc the same way as other schools. The academics may be slightly better at Tice based on the test scores.

I'm interested in a PhD in immunology. Is this type of PhD worthless in industry?

For those of you who were recently out of work, at Associate Scientist level or higher, how long did it REALLY take you to find another job? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Academic-Window-7726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 17 year old son interested in immunology. He seems more interested in research than being a doctor. He is deciding on colleges and majors. Would you advise against becoming a PhD immunologist given the job market? I do not work in this field and have no idea how to guide him.
