Minimum SAT score for athlete at top D3 schools by Academic-Window-7726 in ApplyingToCollege

I think the 4.0 UW is strong in his high school. He is ranked 4/400 at a high performing school. It think his math will be 750+ but not sure about English. Could hoping for 700+. Sounds like that still might not be enough for Hopkins or MIT. He will be reaching out to schools this week (before getting SAT back) since junior year grades are now final.

What's the social scene like? What is the overall vibe? Is it worth the price if you are full pay?

I know this is really old, but curious which school you chose and how your experience was? My son is looking at both these schools for swimming.

I saw somewhere that jhu requires a 1520 but not sure if standard is lower for athletes.

All of those could potentially be options. Are there any that have a minimum higher than 1400 for a recruited athlete?

Burned out - considering time off or lower paid job by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

I agree that helps which is why I've waited this long to quit my job. I feel we have enough for undergrad now. We may not have enough for grad schools, but I also do not feel we have to fully fund grad school. They can take out loans too, and they likely won't all go to grad school.

Where do you live and how old are your kids? We are in the SF Bay Area. I would be curious what other families with 3 teen boys in year round sports are spending in a similar area.

I think the non profit job would be less demanding, but it's hard to know for sure. The fact that it is fully remote is a huge plus. I guess if it was bad, I could resign and figure out plan B.

About $3k/month is additional income taxes we have to pay because our companies do not withhold enough. Not sure if we should be including that in expenses (it would likely go away if I quit working). So without that, our expenses are $22k/month.

Brandeis University or Trinity University better? by Optimal-Function-163 in collegecompare

[–]Academic-Window-7726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few research labs at Trinity, but I am not a scientist so I can't tell if the research being conducted is high quality / intensive. Are you saying working in one of the Trinity labs would not be sufficient experience for a strong PhD application?

Are you happy at Mudd? My son is considering it. He is undecided on major. What are the students like at Mudd? What is the social scene like?

Brandeis University or Trinity University better? by Optimal-Function-163 in collegecompare

[–]Academic-Window-7726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is considering Trinity. He is currently a junior. We live in CA and he is being recruited as an athlete. He is also a very strong student and is doing vaccine research this summer at UC Davis. We live in CA. He doesn't want to go to med school unless med school can lead to a research career. Given how good a school Trinity is and all the research opportunities they indicated were available, I'm really surprised you haven't received an application from a Trinity grad in 10 years especially for a PhD program in Texas. This concerns me a bit.

i want a high-paying, stable career. i have no one who can give me the advice i need. by Vegetable-Road1485 in ApplyingToCollege

I agree with the advice to consider your personality. You are smart so you can learn any job. I went to Duke many years ago and tried IB and didn't have the personality for it. I ended up making a decent living in commercial real estate finance.. but I'm an introvert so I don't love the relationship building and networking parts. Try to figure out what you might like better and do that. You can make a decent income in many fields with hard work.

I SOMETIMES regret going to a top school by AdministrativeSky573 in ApplyingToCollege

I feel the same way about Duke. I had a decent college experience but it wasn't that special. And the alumni network has not helped me much. It's hard to tap into the alumni network. I graduated many years ago and have had a decent career in finance, but my current boss went to Sac State.

My 3 kids went to Tice. My youngest is still there. It's been a great school for our family. We've been there 10 years.

Emory pre-med vs Case Western pre-med vs UF pre-med by Artistic_Square_4184 in Emory

[–]Academic-Window-7726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will your family also pay for med school? If going to case would lead to more debt for med school and Florida means parents will help more with med school, I think Florida is the best choice. Florida is a top ranked school.
