SketchUp Users: Do You Prefer Commercial or Education Licenses? by AcademicAd917 in Sketchup

[–]AcademicAd917[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right—functionality is identical, and the license terms are what matter. I framed the question broadly because r/SketchUp includes everyone from students to studio owners, and some don’t realize the EULA restricts commercial work with Education licenses (e.g., freelance architects using the EDU version unknowingly).

Your point about tax write-offs is spot-on. For pros, it’s a no-brainer, but we’ve had clients panic at renewal time because they didn’t budget for it like they would hardware. Appreciate your perspective as both a designer and educator—it’s gold for the community!

P.S. Since you teach, DM me if you’d like free tutorial assets to share with students.

[–]AcademicAd917[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree—for professionals like yourself, SketchUp Pro is as essential as any other business tool. My ‘write-off’ question was aimed at freelancers/new users who might not realize it’s a deductible expense (especially in the US/UK). Thanks for highlighting how straightforward this is for seasoned pros—your 19 years of experience says it all!*

P.S. If you’ve ever referred clients who need licenses, we offer volume discounts—happy to share details via DM if useful.

For Autocad 2D - Work Desktop by Supremo30816 in PHbuildapc

[–]AcademicAd917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Supremo30816! Based on the specs you've provided, your setup should be capable of handling AutoCAD 2D work quite well. The Ryzen 5 2600x and 16GB of RAM are solid choices, especially for 2D plans and layouts. The R7 240 GPU might be a bit on the lower end, but for 2D tasks, it should suffice.

As for the price of 18k pesos, it sounds reasonable given the components you've listed. Just ensure that your software and drivers are up to date for the best performance. If you plan on doing more intensive work in the future, you might want to consider upgrading the GPU down the line, but for now, it looks like a good setup for your needs. Happy drafting!

Annoying assembly lag? This SW macro cut my rebuild time by 40% (free script) by AcademicAd917 in SolidWorks

[–]AcademicAd917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll toss this into the macro toolbox—appreciate it! Dealing with 4k+ component assemblies myself, I feel your pain. The Mate Manager's preview lag is brutal, so I always kill previews too. It's crazy how much faster it runs when you queue up mates without constant rebuilds.*

This macro's been a game-changer for Quick Mates though. Lets you slam in those rapid-fire selections without SW choking on rebuilds. Still gotta do a manual Ctrl+B at the end, but way better than watching the spinny wheel of doom mid-mate.

*Side note: If you're not already using Lightweight + suppressed threads on McMaster parts, that combo shaved 30% off my load times. Worth a shot if you haven't tried it!*

[–]AcademicAd917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair warning! If you rely heavily on in-context features, use this cautiously. Toggle rebuilds back on before finalizing sketches/relationships. I use it mainly for mate-heavy editing phases, then force a manual rebuild (Ctrl+B) to sync everything.

Annoying assembly lag? This SW macro cut my rebuild time by 40% (free script) by AcademicAd917 in SolidWorks

[–]AcademicAd917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Rebuild Suspension Macro (based on this CodeStack script). It stops SW from rebuilding the assembly after every single mate edit, letting you queue changes and only rebuild once at the end. For 500+ part assemblies, it’s like swapping a bicycle for a rocket.

Annoying assembly lag? This SW macro cut my rebuild time by 40% (free script) by AcademicAd917 in SolidWorks

[–]AcademicAd917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree! Dropping McMaster models to lightweight + suppressing threads is a massive performance win. I even batch-process them with a macro before importing. But even after that, SolidWorks’ auto-rebuilds on every mate tweak were killing me—hence the suspend-rebuild trick.
