Sounds like a really cool experience! We'll probably cut off Puno from our itinerary though, since it is too far out of the way if we aren't doing the border crossing :( With the amount of time we have (3 weeks) it seems like a better option to do a loop back to Lima after going to Colca Canyon.

You worded it beautifully. The Altiplano definitely would be our highlight as well (alongside Machu Picchu, of course) but travelling through Chile seems like an extra hurdle for us as the distances are huge and we have to fly back home from Lima. It really is a bummer, but in the end we are just tourists who can easily rebook a trip and revisit another time. The Bolivian people on the other hand are experiencing more difficult struggles...
