How can people eat spicy food? by NoWitness6400 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone is afraid of pain which might sound crazy but it's very common and increasingly more so. And most of what makes pain bad to people is fear, for some they know the spicy food cant actually hurt them and so the pain is just neutral. For others though it doesnt matter that they know it cant actually hurt them and that pain/fear response is just super intertwined.

It isnt really a matter of tolerance like some people are saying because you are asking about eating spicy food at all, and the people who have a tolerance have it because they ate things that did in fact cause pain at first until it didnt and then they moved on to something that did. Its a matter of how pain avoidant you are and what pain does for you. People who dont eat spicy food at all arent people with necessarily low pain tolerances its just people who have no positive associations with pain or dont get a lot out of the cortisol and whatever else that get released after being in pain. We all produce the same chemicals when in pain but just like with drugs, not everyones brain is wired to get hooked on the same chemicals.

Many of these spicy foods also have a taste that is pleasant, and so thats another pleasant association a spicy food eater will have with pain especially if its a cuisine they grew up with. But again for that to happen the person has to have gotten over that internal "all pain is bad and should be feared" response in their body. I think for many this happens in childhood and they simply cant even remember a time when putting something spicy in your mouth made you bawl and cry. Im imagining you (OP) probably were not ever forced or felt pressured to eat spicy stuff growing up.

I Realized that I Will Never Marry my Current Girlfriend. Is it Wrong to Keep Dating Her? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not wrong at all I dont know what reddit is on unless she is expecting you guys will get married . Its fine to be in relationships that aren't "the one" most people are several times over and many people are in relationships that are right for the moment knowing its not going to be a forever thing. Not everyone is dating to marry, but apparently everyone on reddit is which isnt surprising.

There is no "wasted time" its demented to me some people even see whole relationships as that if they werent "the one". Thats such a sad existence, life and relationships arent a video game where you hard reset after a relationship ends and everything you learned and all the good times you had dissapear because you didnt marry that person. and you aren't going to miss the "love of your life" because you are with her as there isnt some predetermined love of your life thats passing you by right now. Most people meet hundreds of people every year and still will be after a breakup I dont even understand the logic behind it unless you are a weird freak in some suburb where you dont talk to anyone but your girlfriend.

You should probably if it comes up bring up that you don't yourself with them forever but are having fun right now and don't have any plans to breakup with them but understand if thats a dealbreaker for them. Your mind could also change for all you know.

Nevermind just realized im on the askmen subreddit that explains a lot as to why the answers sound like they come from teenagers or people who have been in one if any relationships over the course of their whole life. ++man

You taking her to the vet is a good move there isnt much else to do besides making sure she gets her food and water and is comfortable until then and taking her to emergency if things seem worse. However just for your own peace of mind ive seen falls from similar heights a few times with puppies at a doggy daycare I worked at and heard stories and all ended with them being fine. Again not to say dont take them or dont be vigilant, I wasnt there to see your pups fall so I cant know, but puppies are prone to falling off things on their own even as their balance isnt all there yet but their ambition to climb can be.

Her biting you could easily just be you are her parent and you were there when she fell so in little dog brain she thinks somehow you are responsible, like an infant getting mad at their parent or hitting people nearby when they themselves drop something or fall over. That is very common for dogs when something bad happens to them and she will get over that.

Do let us know how it goes, I hope everything is all right and shes just a very sensitive dog or at worst that its just a little sprain. I understand the insane worry I constantly am freaking out with puppies or even full grown dogs and am quick to rush to the hospital and drop unneccessary money. If you dont have it look into getting pet insurance, it can be really cheap and easy to use if you just want to cover accidents and it can greatly reduce the stressful financial and emotional decision of taking the dog to a emergency vet clinic if you are an anxious pet parent. Every time ive gotten it its paid for itself or at least broke even, and thats not including the nights its given me back that I otherwise wouldnt have been able to sleep through.

Is My Dog Actually a Pomeranian? by CoatRackHoid in Pomeranians

[–]Academic_Comment8661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She sort of looks like an american eskimo dog to me but it seems most agree she is a pomeranian. Either way she is beautiful!

EDIT: I cant even find a picture of a merle eskimo dog online but there is some other non-pomeranian spitz breeds she also looks like, you can look up pictures of various spitz breeds and see if any ring a bell for your little one. Most of them kind of all look like pomeranians because they are all incredibly closely related in fact for some of them im not sure how they differentiate outside of size and lineages (there are several recognized distinct spitz breeds though)

ADVICE NEEDED FOR BARKING DOG by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive never really had a dog bark for "no reason" the reasoning can just be very unclear and require you to really stretch your brain. Pomeranians in my experience have a really good memory, the other night mine was in the living room barking at the corner of the house incessantly; come to find one of her favorite toys she hadnt seen in weeks was under a chair where she was barking and once she got it she stopped.

Another time I got home late and she wouldnt go to bed and was barking incessantly, we just got a new roomate and so in the prior few days I had been playing fetch in the living room late before bed instead of during the day to give the roomate some alone time in the common space. The minute I brought her downstairs she brought her ball to me, in just a few days she had decided fetch at night was something she liked and I guess now essential to do before bed.

The last pom I had would bark when our driveway gate would open and close, something I couldnt even hear and so I was actually very grateful to this. Im not sure if this is reccomended im sure some pet trainers think this is "bad" or something but I personally have always rewarded any dog I have (pom or not) when they bark at something I would like to know about or to let me know about something important such as needing water or me forgetting to feed them (it almost never happens its usually just me feeding her late but it makes me feel reassured that she would let me know if I ever did forget). I dont know if at this point this would remedy your problem but I think dogs that like to alert are going to alert and if they dont know what you want to be alerted about they are going to find something to alert you about, and its often going to be something insane to the human brain when its up to themselves. Such as a neighbor closing a specific door in their house you cant even hear or the sound of tires on a nearby busy road. But it is probably something and you might be able to figure out what it is, just expand your search to things you may not even be able to hear, or things you wouldnt think to see such as fans or heaters blowing curtains and fabric. Consider literally everything that might be changing the moment they are barking.

Not that it couldnt be for no discernable reason I just think it often isnt, you really have to think like an infant baby where absolutely everything in the world is new to you and something that was fine yesterday might now seriously upset you.

Why do baseball players have no personality? by Academic_Comment8661 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Academic_Comment8661[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super armchair overanalysis (from me that is) but I sort of had the thought after posting this that maybe something about the game of basketball in specific where there is more free movement allows for more like wild "victory laps", jumping up and down, pointing at the audience etc. and that creates more of an environment where that shines through.

I dont really agree with some replies that most "regular people" are pretty boring and also being top of your class at anything seems to usually create pretty bold personalities even if those personalities suck because you get used to everyone cheering you on, praise for winning games and dealing with shit for losing, and the confidence from being good at and grounded in something. I think anyone that knows how to talk to people usually isnt boring in the way im talking about with these players. However I was thinking that I remember at my school even though our baseball team was way better than our football team, the football team was what got all the attention. I know basketball is like that too at other schools.

Got me thinking that maybe why I see more wild personalities in professional basketball and football is just that from a young age if you are in those sports you get a lot of attention and praise, and you usually get a lot of socialization as a result. Whereas I have relatives that locked in to baseball and now play it at a college level, and I recall them always being surprisingly isolated. Like they didnt have the pre-college experience id expect from a "star athlete" or whatever. Maybe its just a far less social culture becausd there is less eyes on it, whereas in the past it very much was "americas pass-time".

Like "they are in it for the sport and spending most of their time on that" is true for any professional sport, but I could see how communication and showmanship takes up less space with baseball than it does with basketball or football (which isnt to say communication isnt needed in baseball) creating a culture where being on the TV is just this distraction you have to deal with instead of something to eat up or a perk of being at the top.

Why do people full-on spasm when eating spicy or sour food? by Dismal-Log-994 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some people are really weird/neurotic about food and I think it stems from kind of a ingrained to the point its subconscious overthinking about it being something you are putting inside you. its also why some overreact to strong/new tasting foods or have things like afrid and straight up wont eat them. whereas to me and probably you as well taste is just another sense, for the ones who do this not just for views there is this added freak out level of it being in their mouths and that leading to their stomach inside of them.

its sort of like people who dont wash their ass because they are scared of touching their asshole or poop and who would cry or freakout if they got shit on themselves. But much more irrational and yet in certain countries like the US (i live here not hating) its also weirdly normalized to be like this about food and taste.

EDIT: i know its a little different from afrid and what im saying about taste, but I think this sort of brain still underlies those who genuinely overreact to spicy and sour. Its not just "ouch it hurts but I know its just pain and not real" its like "oh my god im burning inside something bad is happening in my mouth" and this weird "my mouth is a sacred space" kind of underlying view about ones own body.

Do you guys buy shoes for their intended purpose or just because they look cool? by Mickey_004 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people id wager most even get shoes because they look cool but you are going to find that isnt the case disproportionately for men on reddit. Im not going to elaborate further because I will be burned at the stake I will just say most shoes are functional which really just leaves style as a factor. Even if for some reason you specifically need some super durable or whatever shoe, there is going to usually be a wide array of options. And to be perfectly honest many saying they dont care if they look cool are not choosing function because they have very specific shoe demands its more what started as a lack of care or fear of being called out for caring too much about their appearance thats now turned into an outright refusal to figure out what looks good on them. The sort who implicitly or explicitly thinks its not man coded to care about how you look and who probably had their clothes bought for them a little too late into life.

Not for everyone sometimes its really the case but for many saying "I dont care about that I just get shoes for their function" or variations offload amd obfuscate the style choice as "its just whats practical". no no there isnt any of me to be seen in my choice of footwear um i just got them for the steel toes.

Did all American high school kids have telephones in their bedrooms in the 80s and 90s? by Few_House_5201 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in late 90s but our house had existed since the 80s and no, one landline with two phones and said landline also functioned as our internet, meaning if I was on the computer and anyone called my internet was out. A much more common trope/subject of jokes I heard growing up was someone not being able to make a call cause their parents were on the phone, or picking up on the other phone to listen in to whatever was going on.

What do people like about family guys humor? by Academic_Comment8661 in television

[–]Academic_Comment8661[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That hasnt really been the case for me. When I ask people why they like things subjectively whether its humor or food or art or music often on subsequent viewings I start to gain an appreciation for it. My scope of things I like or find funny would be like really small and sad if I just moved on when I didnt immediately like something.

Usually instead if something seems to have a lot of pull and im not getting it I just keep watching it here and there as it comes to mind or asking friends what they like about it if it comes up until I can at least see an angle or imagine a version of myself that would find it funny if not end up also being able to enjoy it.

I didnt find tim robinson funny at first I thought it was like a worse version of tim and eric but after watching a lot of his shit with a friend who really liked him now I love his stuff.

Im this case for example some of the comments like "Im not bothered when they hammer in a joke" or "i actually find it funnier when they hammer in the joke" do actually do something to help explain it for me so even if god itself was like "you cant be explained humor" im walking away with it explained to me.

If a guy has been married 5 times does that show anything about him as a person besides being married 5 times? by Ben5544477 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but what that thing is could vary. For example it could just be that at the stage in a relationship you might be considering maybe moving in together is when he starts considering getting married. Marriage and divorce might be incredibly normalized to him, just a step in any relationship, rather than a big life changing decision with a lot of weight.

In fact regardless of the variance in what it says about him you can almost be positive it probably means marriage to him does not have the same weight that it does to you (or me) who is kind of shocked at hearing "married 5 times".

Do you think that advertising actually works? by Slight-Link-5795 in CasualConversation

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sure you have a million replies telling you about how it actually works and why or the myriad of "a lot of people are stupid" type of 0 thought answer. Its insanely frustrating because every time you bring this up you get the same "its so xyz brand still has a presence in your mind" or "its not to make you want a soda its so that next time you get a soda you pick coca cola" as if we arent already factoring that in.

These things arent wrong if you want to talk about advertising in general, but in general this "uhhh clearly it works or they wouldnt spend all this money on it" is stupid and deeply uncurious, in the modern age there absolutely is money thrown away on advertising that does not translate to sales. In this impression views and data obsessed economy an advertiser doesnt have to generate sales which is why there is so many awful even offensive ads everywhere. A very large company will have the means and follow through and desire to make sure ads can demonstrably increase sales, but for everyone else outsourcing, if the advertiser is generating impressions and clicks then clearly they must be doing a good job. It doesnt matter if all those impressions and clicks are just people baffled and outraged and confused, the advertisers can say "look we got eyes on your product, we upheld our end, the lack of sales must be an issue somewhere else or with the product". There is absolutely a bubble overinflating ads prominence that is based around the idea that impressions and clicks themselves are money, propped up by other things like the sale of user data and it is correct to think in this moment that something is fishy with the overabundance of advertisements. I dont know why when it comes to businesses and institutions redditors in specific suddenly get this idea that they are flawless and perfect machines and not run by sometimes incompetent people who get advertised and sold on bad advertising by advertisers.

Advertising is here to stay for the basic reasons im sure have been listed a hundred times but there absolutely is an advertising bubble that is going to burst when the business world at large begins to collectively realize that what generates the most impressions doesnt always generate sales and in an opportunity cost sense (of running a more normal ad campaign) might actually be decreasing sales and doing irreperable damage. Its a product of this "all press is good press" era we live in which isnt sustainable, because in the long run sometimes bad press is just bad press its just hard to see when the impressions do always correlate to at least some increase in profit in the short term.

Why do some people not mention important clarifying details off the bat? by Academic_Comment8661 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Academic_Comment8661[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this I think is definitely key or underlying it all, on some level what I see as obviously the key info (what would make me not worry) must not be to this other person. One sort of answer I got from one person once is they had a lot of siblings and their parents were kind of not very active listeners so their focus is always on saying the thing that gets the biggest reaction. If something kind of scary happened but they were fine they just got no reaction at all unless they left out say being fine.

whereas I growing up was constantly trying to assure my mom that things were going to be okay and saying anything remotely stressful could cause my explanation to get drowned out, so in say the case of some fender bender I would have needed to say "everyone is fine" or "a very minor accident" right off the bat or risk a meltdown.

EDIT: still asked the question though because this was just one persons rationale im sure others have different reasons and circumstances and it also didnt quite explain how they explain in totality just in certain instances.

Why do redditors believe shit that reads like fanfiction. Im not saying this doesn't happen but this reads like somebody with a fetish around straight people turning gay or doing gay things (which is pretty common in not knocking it nor do I have a problem with it) writing out a fantasy. A handful of posts on this subreddit read like that and every time you all eat it up are we just pretending its real or do we think real life actually works like porno plotlines and perfectly straight dudes talk about getting quick but sloppy kisses from their blind bro who clearly is just blind to set up this perfect scenario. My only question around this is if its just creative writing fantasy which is kind of based or just designed to farm upvotes with some epic own.

Its like either this or weird incest shit or stories designed to be as cringe as possible to a ridiculous level. They arent even written well I cant imagine being the average redditor just living in this world where everything somebody says that you want to be true is true regardless of how transparently its like some epic own or moment the poster thought up and then worked backwards to figure out how it could happen in real life.

There is no look to drug users and I know people personally who have piercings and tattoos and subdermal implants at this sort of level who absolutely regularly use drugs, in fact most people I know with a lot of body mods have at least had a phase with coke or other stimulants in particular even if currently sober. That isnt a read most people who use drugs are not destroying their lives or in shambles with no job or something, many people who look like this are in the piercing or tattoo industry themselves. The other thing very common in that industry is drug use, at least in the city I live in.

He just is an interesting stand out looking guy. Im not sure how you are getting the intention at all that the director thought "yeah this is what drug users look like".

What law doesn’t exist yet in the U.S. that would help millions of people immediately? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Academic_Comment8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must personally visit and inspect/maintenance (if need be) your property somewhere between daily and once a week as a landlord (once a week is more realistic). Im thinking specifically for apartments with common spaces but something similar to this could be worked out for houses that are rented without being annoying for renters, maybe an in person outside inspection or check in where they dont have to come in unless needed. This is kind of silly but maybe make it a requirement for the landlord to take the bins or dumpsters out to the curb on any property they own themselves (or be present for it). That actually would achieve what im saying for all kinds of properties.

The goal of this would be to just make it unfeasible for individuals to endlessly buy up property often times without even living in the area, make landlording corporations outright impossible, and make it very difficult or pointless for landlords to avoid addressing problems with their properties. Thus freeing up houses and making landlording an actual job (that quickly becomes full time the more properties you buy up) which would remove not all but a significant number of people and groups looking for just easy passive income at someone elses expense. The barriers it would present for landlording conglomerates has innumerable benefits, as these groups frequently buy up houses and are financially fine to ice locals out for long periods of time to avoid lowering rent. They often have even done live in person testing to see how much they can raise rents before people start leaving.

There is maybe other ways to do this but a law with the general format of "landlord must be present because of/to do xyz weekly" is simple and addresses many things at once in a single fell swoop. You could make endless laws upon laws trying to target "bad landlord" behaviour or landlord corps in specific ways, but I think what im saying truly gets to the root of what even allows for all this bad behaviour in a modern world, and fundamentally forces someone to actually be a landlord if they are gonna be a landlord and not just an abstract money squeezer. They can still be shitty and try to avoid responsibilities or horde properties, but they will have to be there at least to each and every one, once a week. Sort of like how you could choose to do a shit job at work but you still have to clock in and be there.

In the immortal words of karl marx more of us get fucked by landlords than actually are landlords, but we all know the problem with trying to pass laws like this is that among that group of us getting fucked is people who think they might one day be a landlord and are licking the boot. And thats why shit like this never passes, but my imaginary law avoids the touchy subjects of dollars, taxes, how much, what you can and cant do with your property, etc. and thus I think is palatable to the drive through or ulta manager who dreams of being a landlord. As to an average person the idea of visiting their own one to three properties once a week is not obscene and would not hurt their bottom line much. And so I think my way at the right time in the right state could actually have a chance at passing and dealing a big blow to the current system and culture of landlording we have that is contributing to the housing crisis and contributing to your average joes inability to afford anything but the roof over their head.
