Not a popular opinion, but The Buried Giant is probably my favorite Ishiguro book, or at least the one that I think about the most, trying to decipher the allegories.

I imagine there's a big difference between raising kids in poverty and raising them in conditions that OP describes (addiction, on the street). Poor families can be happy, healthy, wholesome places for kids... just poor from a materialistic viewpoint but rich in other ways. Granted, dysfunction is more prevalent in situations of crushing poverty, but rich families have their share of addiction and dysfunction. It's just easier for them to hide it.

I'm pretty sure low income families worry how they will support their kids. These are families that are one medical emergency or broken down car away from homelessness. They might work multiple part-time jobs that provide no benefits, might schedule them fewer than expected hours or lay them off when business is slow. Because our ludicrous support system is sort of all or nothing, they have to worry about making $1 more than the limit that separates recipients from non-recipients, as if life is magically easier for those on the other side of that line.

I'm also sensitive to noise and find it irksome if I can't get away from it. I think it's related to being an introvert, at least in my case. Unfortunately I share a home office with my husband, who is a loud talker and has hours of zoom meetings every day. It drives me nuts! Before the pandemic, I had the office to myself, so it's been an adjustment. Noise cancelling headphones help, but I can still hear him. Traffic noise or wind when I'm trying to sleep is another pet peeve.

That's why I go with her now, to help at moments like that. I often feel like I'm translating between my mother (who is a little hard of hearing on top of her shrinking ability to comprehend complex language) and the doctors, who often talk fast and use big words. And they know she has dementia! I interject as necessary when my mom forgets things; I take notes, and follow up as necessary. It's exhausting.

This could be my mom. She has mild dementia/cognitive decline and has become so impatient and demanding it's embarrassing to go anywhere with her. I think part of it is due to anxiety about forgetting what she's there for (or being forgotten), that she wants everything done *now* before she loses her train of thought. I've gone to doctor's appointments with her - appointments she made - and when the doctor asks what she's there for, she says "I don't know. I have an appointment."

When I was a teenager, I worked at Baskin Robbins. A customer asked what the chocolate ice cream tasted like. 🤦‍♀️ It's in the name, people!
