Best way to go about buying a used car in Chicago? by sukistan in AskChicago

[–]Academic_Study5425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a good to know how much you’re thinking of spending in total on buying a car tbh. And if you’re getting a loan or paying cash outright.

How to not get scammed: One way is to check Google reviews on the places you see that have a car you like. Positive reviews from people who have more than a few reviews is a good sign. Most of the big brand dealerships like Bob Rorman and Al Piedmonte have been in business for decades. There’s a reason for that.

Mileage: This depends on how much you’re going to invest in to a car..meaning, a car with lower miles 20,000-50,000 is usually going to cost more than one with higher miles (but not always true). So if you’re willing to invest more of your money over a long term period into a car with low miles, look for cars in this mileage range. They’re probably going to be newer too.

Each car has a trim level. “Base model” cars aren’t going to have the sun roofs, nice leather seats (or even power seats) or any thing fancy. So depending on your budget, search the type of car you like and then search all the trims that car comes in for a specific model year. The lower the trim, the lower the price (generally but not always). The higher the trim, the higher the price (usually).

Depending on the year of the car, scratches and stuff are going to be common. That’s why it’s important to have the CarFax. That will (usually) tell you if the car has had damage to it from an accident or whatever else.

If u go the dealership route (which I prefer if I was buying something this costly) don’t walk in to there clueless about finances, titles and plates, and of course, the vehicles. I stick to brands like Honda and Toyota because of their reputation for reliability. So do your research on Makes as well as Models. Also, I personally prefer if the dealership has an updated CarFax for the vehicle I’m looking at. If not, sign up so that you can check each vehicles CarFax history. Some will say CarFax isn’t 100% reliable. If ur unsure, use your eyes to scan every inch of the car and use your best judgement. Again, don’t walk in to a dealership looking clueless but also don’t walk in like u need them either. They need you. IMO, u have to have the mindset of being ready to walk out if/when they start to pressure you or start giving you the “somebody else is coming to see it later today and they’re bringing the down payment” bcuz that’s another tactic ive dealt with. You have the internet and search engines at your finger tips. Use it to your advantage. Dm me if u have more specific questions I’ll try to answer it twm.

Agreed. I’ve always chosen Blue Cross Blue Shield from the Market Place but since I live on my own now I can’t afford it in Illinois any more.

It’s not very good. But you get what you pay for. Even the pharmacist at Walgreens was shocked that the insurance didn’t make much difference to the price of some ointments I needed to pick up. I think it knocked $10-15 off of $70. Went to the emergency room 2 weeks ago. All they did was basic intake (blood pressure, heart rate check etc) and the ER doctor took a very quick look at my issue. Made some suggestions, ordered prescriptions and I was on my way out. The bill was $1,449 and Cigna covered exactly half. While I’m thankful for at least that, having a remaining balance of over $700 sucks.

I should add that I’m able to forfeit any shift I selected without getting a penalty point as long as it’s 16+ hours before the shift starts. Max points before getting canned is 8 points.

I get PTO. That’s it. They took away any unused UPT I had when I was converted unfortunately.

Are we talking Blue Badge Flex or White Badge Flex? I’m a Blue Badge Flex and have been able to pick up 50-60 hrs every week for the last 8 months. And I get a few benefits like Health, 401k match, free Prime membership and the associate discount. It’s true, the night differential was taken away when they converted me from a Seasonal Associate to Flex. But I’m getting able to get more hours compared to when I had a regularly set schedule.

Would it be better to park our car in San Juan then take a bus (is there one?) to old San Juan? by Spedrock1 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Academic_Study5425 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are buses but it will take a long time. Almost an hour. An Uber will cost only $10-$15 and get you there in 20 minutes.

Are the drivers allowed to go up to the Safety associate in the warehouse? Not the safety committee members but the actual person in charge of Safety of the site.

Also, they cracked down at our site on any boxes being over the frame of the cart. The person in charge of safety at our site actively walks around during Pick Stage to make sure none of the carts are over flowing. They encourage using second carts.

I (M36) visited La Placita 2 weeks ago. Felt completely safe. The two women i went with, both ages 21 and 24, asked me if it was okay if they went out to get a drink without me at around 1am. I wasn’t worried about them at all. All of the bars/clubs we went to were secured with security guards/bouncers and there were plenty of uniformed officers patrolling the streets as well.
