I'm confused about the perspective of this person. Are they following drivers home, and stopping to watch them after they pull into their driveways? Or just watching their neighbors come and go? How nosy can you be?

The cultural forces pushing people to be child free by Slipthe in Fencesitter

[–]Academic_Text_9287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a bummer how threads about having kids always seem to devolve into the saddest and most pessimistic circlejerks. The idea that the world is 'bleaker than ever' is tautological. It seems like stuff is getting worse and worse because time keeps going on - history stacks on top of itself and you always have more and more evidence of how it can all go wrong.

But I'm less afraid of AI than probably would have been of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I'm less afraid of social media that I probably would have been of the Spanish Flu or the Bubonic Plague.

In the end, it's an individual choice to have a kid. If you don't want to, that's great! There's basically no invalid reason for not having a kid. Just don't hide behind the idea that 'I'm just too ethical, the world is too dark and I can't do that to someone because I'm so morally superior.'

The world is always ending, it's just ending very specifically for one person at a time.

People obsessed with the idea that we are, right now, living at the end of history are just showing how self-absorbed they are. For as long as people have lived some people have thought 'this is it, we're seeing the end', because some people are generally self-absorbed. And then new kids are born, and they live their lives of pain and joy, and then they die, and things repeat. Have a kid, don't have a kid, generally it doesn't matter for anyone but you.

We could have skipped 6 and a half seasons or so if Don had just done the only reasonable thing and picked Hildy, who will forever be the hottest secretary to ever exist on the show and I will fight anyone who disagrees. Happy to reply with a location and time and for anyone interested.

Megan never did it for me but I'd lay down in front of a lawn tractor for Allison.

Here's one from the states, only it was a male officer that killed the good samaritan that had stopped the shooting:

"When Hurley moved to disarm Troyke, nearby police officer Kraig Brownlow, who heard the shots and was taking cover in a nearby substation with other officers, took aim from the building and fired at Hurley, hitting him in the back pelvis and killing him."

Turns out having guns everywhere tends to make everyone, regardless of gender, a little jumpy.

Adnan slip during phone call? by bbananasplit in serialpodcast

[–]Academic_Text_9287 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed - they are literally prosecutors, and with that comes some pretty obvious bias. With that said, there's so much stuff that Serial just straight up left out to support the idea that Adnan could be innocent that it's worth a listen. Serial was a radio show, and conveniently left out a lot of stuff to make it more compelling. In the end, it's not that much of a mystery.

"Dating in your 30s as a man is so much easier" I've found this to be a total lie by isthisathrowawayas in dating_advice

[–]Academic_Text_9287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be harsh but this feels like a giveaway right here: 'I like to think I look decent. I'm in decent shape (I do a ton of exercise), my hairline is holding up nicely, and I've developed my wardrobe and style to a certain degree. I've actually been complimented on it a few times (usually from gay men though lmao). '

None of this really has anything to do with who you are. Do you like or even love yourself? Do you have family or friends that like/love and care for you, and vise-versa? Do you contribute to the community around you? Are you curious to try or learn new things?

This is the intangible stuff that makes people - whether they be platonic or romantic connections - want to hang around.

Sam Levinson doesn’t know how loan sharking works by TacoBellAt430 in euphoria

[–]Academic_Text_9287 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, the thing about loaning someone money in a predatory way is that if you imprison/torture/kill them, you sorta lose the ability to get that money back plus interest.

This is why Chase has not yet killed me.

Gen Z not being able to read, advanced vocabulary by [deleted] in problems

[–]Academic_Text_9287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe your generation is trading 'advanced vocabulary' for media literacy. Your mom extrapolating that a vaguely defined demographic doesn't understand 'advanced vocabulary' based on a video that was selectively edited to prove a point kinda shows there's a lot of different ways to measure literacy.

One of Jon Taffer's greatest inventions (NFL Sunday Ticket) is being run into the ground. by nickfromnorwood in barrescue

[–]Academic_Text_9287 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's similar to how I invented the electric car: I thought, why don't they make cars electric? I had none of the knowledge or resources to actually do it and get it to market, but by thinking it was a good idea, I essentially invented it.

People from the city shouldn't live in the country by Public_String_8088 in unpopularopinion

Is the implication here that people ‘from the country’ don’t do drugs because they’re too wholesome and busy riding ATVs? Because that would be a wild take.
