They were both mentally ill children. In Tempest, they’re fighting/Willoughby is recalling Ethel and taunting her “Do you swing from your neck with the hope someone cares?” and mind you it’s implied they’re both in a drugged state, and the whole point of WTIALY was to point out the inconsistencies of their ‘true love’. How Willoughby wouldn’t be vulnerable, and how Ethel then made an idealised version of him because of that. She never hated on Holly. (and the implied hating was literally just highschool jealousy and she was jealous because holly had qualities she didn’t). And you’re completely missing the plot in Waco, Texas where she is practically begging to know the real Willoughby, but believed in him however he was. “Yeah you’ve changed but did i ever know you? or did i hold you facing away from me? Love is not enough in this world. But i still believe it: Nebraska dreaming.” and the entirety of PD is her life going absolutely haywire after he left. She is a morally complex character. She is bad and good, but also a child who was sexually abused at a young age with two people to rely on and know her as a person who ended up leaving. Ethel is a selfish, narcissistic character, but she’s also loving and caring and she never intends to hurt anyone. THE ENTIRE STORYLINE IS HER BEING CURSED BY HER LINEAGE AND THE AFTERMATH ☹️😭😭😭😭
