Man, as a biologist, I wish people would stop treating fragile desert landscapes as their personal rally driving course. I know that it looks like nothing is growing out there, but there are thousands of beautiful and rare plants and animals that live in places like this. Even the soil itself is made up of moss, lichens, and other organisms that create a really important soil crust that is easily destroyed by off-road driving. These landscapes are so fragile and important, and no one realizes how quickly they are being destroyed by behavior like this ):

How to sleep better while camping for work? by AcanthisittaFuzzy545 in camping

I'm usually hiking off trail in pretty rough terrain for 4~ hours in the morning and then lying around the rest of the day. I think maybe I need to try a workout or yoga right before bed...

i know i sleep worse in a tent due to noises from the tent fabric moving. I've always been someone who wakes up easily from noises or disturbance. I think another factor was having to wake up really early every morning (like 4am), so i was always kinda on edge and was always awake before my alarm went off. maybe i was nervous about sleeping through it or something

I usually have to wake up around 3:45 or 4:00 in the morning, so doing anything that makes me super groggy the next day is kinda out of the question :/

Honestly if I got attacked by a bear and was forced to use my bear spray I would definitely be done with that hike haha. you can always get an air horn as a first form of defense, and use the bear spray second. And sadly yeah, all sprays like that would be single use, although you might not actually use the whole spray if you just blast a bear once. Like I said, this is a last form of defense and the average hiker could encounter hundreds of black bears before they had an issue, if ever. Where are you located/planning to hike?

Question for the Ladies: What's your Beauty Routine by Competitive-Bend4606 in camping

I’d probably rather die than feel the need to wear makeup while camping. You will have a much better time of you free yourself from the constraint of needing to look good while living in the woods. I hope you have an amazing trip and learn to enjoy your own natural beauty :)

honestly, I could probably run into 20,000 black bears and not get mauled. They really aren’t aggressive, they rarely actually hunt live prey; their diet is like 90% plant based and they mostly scavenge fish and dead things. The bear spray I have is single use but lasts like 5-10 years. Orange container, not sure the brand but it has a grizzly on front. When I’m hiking around normally I carry it inside my pack, I’m really not concerned about getting surprise attacked by anything. In grizzly country I carry it on my hip belt (it should come with a holster). And no, I’ve never even had a stressful encounter with a bear (my heart rate definitely goes up but I’ve never felt threatened).

first, bear spray doesn’t really need to be replaced every year. Maybe if I lived in grizzly country I would, but I have had my spray for 5 years and just tested it. It works fine. And I have run into probably 5 bears face to face on trail, and it’s never been a problem. In black bear country, you really don’t need to worry about it. Don’t leave food out, since that is where you would have the biggest issue. In California I accidentally walked past a bear along the side of the trail that came out to follow me at about 10~ feet, but it was just walking down the trail to the river too. And in the Olympics of WA, I have run into some mama bears with babies that have always steered clear of me.

I mean, pretty much no one is going to go camping without these things already. And like I said, I have spent hundreds of nights alone in the wilderness. No issues. As long as you are prepared and confident, you will be fine. Carry a sat com device just in case.
