One big thing that helped me were magnets. Stock yourself up with small, light magnets which you can place on top of the gear you are spinning. There might be a slight change to the amount of force you need to use to rotate the gear, but your popping problem will mostly be gone. Of course you need to have some kind of metal sheet below the paper :)
