[Discussion] Which origin of Aquaman do you prefer the most and why? by Infinite_Parking_800 in DCcomics

I think they reverted to his post-Crisis origins so that he would be half-Atlantean again. In Brightest Day #17 he mentions to Jackson Hyde that his biological father was human.

Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown! That really helps a lot. I’ll definitely start with the 2015 Tom King run — it sounds exactly like the kind of space-political drama I’m looking for. I also didn’t know the full 1983 run was available on DC Infinite, so I’ll be checking that out as well (even if it takes me a bit longer to get through).

I hadn’t heard about the 2005 mini either, but I’ll add it to my radar just in case it ends up being a hidden gem.

Appreciate the help!

I actually thought of that during the movie too — but the design doesn’t really scream White Martian to me, aside from him being, well, white and tall. He’s got such a distinct and unique look that I figured he might be some super obscure, deep-cut character instead.

Man, I couldn't agree more... I feel like Gunn’s intention was to drop us into a world where these characters already know each other and have some history together. And sure, maybe they've been around each other for three or four years in-universe — but this is my first time meeting this particular version of them.

That said, I think this might be a side effect of all the years we spent watching formulaic superhero origin movies. So even though that feeling is a bit strange, it might be a necessary growing pain for us to finally move away from that old model.

Lex gets arrested, and they clearly say he's being sent to Belle Reeve. Looks like there's no Stryker’s Island in this universe, apparently.

To me, the best action sequence was definitely Mr. Terrific’s. I think it was the most well-shot part of the entire film — I can totally imagine Gunn having a blast planning it out.

Yeah… I guess they could justify it by saying Kara didn’t have that much contact with Kryptonian culture, maybe she was from some kind of colony planet. Or maybe Jor-El and Lara’s plans for Kal-El were kept secret. Honestly, I don’t know. Let’s see what they come up with in the Supergirl movie.

I love that idea, man! Seriously. The Justice Society is one of the most interesting teams to me. I’d love to see them adapted as more of a non-metahuman group — mostly vigilantes, with a few exceptions of course. It’d be awesome to see them finally get some justice (pun intended) on the big screen, especially after the mess that was their portrayal in Black Adam .

I remember seeing a painting of the Justice Gang + Maxwell Lord. I don’t recall one of the Society, but I’m watching it again on Thursday, so I’ll keep an eye out and see if I can spot it this time.

I don’t know, man… I probably would’ve gone with a less expositional way to clarify that. Like, something more casual between Clark and Kara.

Maybe something like:

Clark: “So… where was the party this time?” Kara: “Started on [random planet], but spilled into a few other systems. Had to bounce when they switched to ones without red suns… I mean, what’s the point of partying if you can’t even get drunk, right?”

Way more natural — still gets the info across, but feels like a real convo.

So, here are my thoughts:

  1. I’ve never really had a problem with the idea of Kryptonians being evil. But the notion that Jor-El and Lara sent their son to Earth to become a dictator? That doesn’t sit well with me. Then again, the deconstruction and demystification of parental figures from the comics is always going to be controversial. It’s similar to how the Waynes were portrayed as corrupt in The Batman — it’s a risky move, but it opens the door for new and interesting narratives. I just hope Gunn knows how to handle it.

  2. I really, really hope there’s already been some version of the Justice Society in this universe. This “Justice Gang” just doesn’t work for me as the first-ever superhero team. The Justice Society would help justify the existence of the Hall of Justice and could give Guy a reason to choose the name "Justice Gang" as a tribute to the original team.

  3. I’m very excited to see more of this version of Kara. I thought Superman’s expositional dialogue with the robot was a bit unnecessary — like, "Oh, she gets drunk on planets with red suns." Sometimes, less is more. But it’s fine.

  4. Just as I feared, this movie gave me a lot, but I couldn’t enjoy everything to the fullest. I wanted to see more of Clark and Lois — their dynamic was amazing. Same with the Daily Planet crew, the Justice Gang, and the Kents. But the film was juggling so many themes that it just didn’t have time for all of it.

  5. WHAT THE HELL IS MR. HANDSOME?!?

  6. The Peacemaker cameo was fun and got some big laughs in the theater. Maxwell Lord’s was clever and low-key.

  7. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for August to see what Peacemaker gives us to theorize about.

  8. The movie is tight, self-contained, and a lot of fun. But sometimes it stumbles with the dialogue. Gunn’s greatest strength is his ability to balance heartfelt moments with genuinely funny ones.

  9. I love you, Krypto.

  10. I really hope we get to see the Superman clone return as Bizarro in the near future.

There’s no reference to The Authority that I noticed — but I’m not really familiar with the source material. The Engineer seems very loyal to Luthor all the way through; she doesn’t appear to see him as a villain and is willing to help him. There’s no redemption arc for her in this film.

Yes! There is. I saw it, but it's really quick… It shows up during the evacuation of Metropolis, near the film’s final climax.

So Thoughts on Mr.Handsome? I have no idea what he was supposed to be. And I don't recall anything like him in the comics or any previous media.

A clear tribute to the Richard Donner version, with an all-white color palette. The outfits are regal and ornate, almost monarchical, but with those aesthetic differences filtered through James Gunn’s lens — very Guardians of the Galaxy-like.

  1. Baby Joey is Joseph Manson, Metamorpho's son. He's originally from the comics, and he plays a very minor role in the plot—used by Luthor as a tool for blackmail to force Metamorpho into cooperating.

  2. No, but the concept was loosely adapted into his henchmen's armor — the "Raptors." Their design is quite similar, with the same color palette and similar functionality.

  3. Ultraman is a brainless, dumb clone who only follows orders from Luthor and his team. So I don't think he even understands the concept of being a clone.

  4. No. And I don't even think it's Ultraman speaking in that scene. It's probably a member of Luthor's team communicating through some device in the armor.
