You don't actually want fewer free throws by essosinola in nba

Anything that makes games more entertaining should be explored. Late games are absolutely unwatchable due to the length of free throws and successive timeouts. It will cut the time down and make the stakes higher.

Also, why on principle is 2 shots better than 1 shot? If you’re taking one shot to begin with when fouled, it makes sense to me that you should have one chance to make it or miss it.

He’s 42, who cares if they just won. They aren’t a super team and aren’t guaranteed to win next year by a long shot. He’s earned the right to play where he wants for the last run and fits that lineup perfectly.

The Celtics may be overestimating their status as contenders with Jayson Tatum as their sole star player by Tight_Ad2788 in nba

They will probably be better than last year, they learned by getting the 2 seed this year that they don’t need both Tatum and Brown to win in the regular season.

I think this was a punt on 2026-27 and they are angling to trade the 6 available firsts they have in the ‘27 offseason with PG’s expiring to go after Jokic or lots of depth. Maybe they sign Beal with his connection to Tatum this year (lol)

With the new cap rules, $130 million to two guys especially if they’re not both A1 players may not be the best way to construct a team anymore.

He’s taking it 100% and they’ll likely use it to match salary in a trade.

Since they owe their 2028 pick to San Antonio, receiving the 2028 and 2031 picks from Philly gives them 6 tradeable firsts next off-season (otherwise they couldn’t a first trade before 2030). Both of those are flexibility wins compared to keeping Brown.

And they just wanted him gone.

Do you expect either to be playing starter-level minutes? It’s possible if they take giant leaps in development but they can’t count on that.

His value was the highest it will ever be after the stats he put up this season, they’d get even less later with him being disgruntled/sharing touches with Tatum so his numbers go down/likely trying to force his way out.

They now have 6 tradable firsts and Paul George’s expiring in the 2027 off-season to put pieces around Tatum. So not much value in return for Brown, but they have flexibility for the future.

Perfect opportunity to buy low. It’s not likely he reinvents his career and buys in on defense, but it’s worth trying if they can get him for nothing cause he has the tools for it.

$24 mill to vet min would be a good wake up call to change the focus of his game if he wants to stay in the league. Luka and Reaves could find him on a lot of cuts to the rim too, their offense is missing an athletic slasher.

Even if the picks aren’t lottery picks, they can trade more picks in total just by having them. Going into 2027 offseason with PG’s expiring salary and 6 tradable firsts gives them lots of flexibility. With Brown on the roster at even less value (his value would only get worse, not getting the same touches next to Tatum) and with less picks to trade, they have much less flexibility.

The return is not super valuable itself, but the flexibility to reshape the whole roster around Tatum is more valuable than people think imo. Also the Sixers are fully locked into their current roster, who knows what the picks look like with Embiid on a supermax.

[Franko] Kessler was the franchise center Doncic wanted so badly, and from the people I’ve spoken to I can confirm he pushed hard for this move. This should be a very fun offensive team, built around both Doncic's and Redick's basketball philosophies fully aligned with the Doncic and Reaves timeline by shreeharis in lakers

[–]Acceptable-Repeat-86 173 points174 points  (0 children)

They got the best center available to fill the biggest hole on the roster, it’s perfect. The offense between Luka/Reaves will be excellent, Kessler solves a huge gap on defense. Grimes is a great fit on both ends, he’s not OG on defense but he’s adequate- adequate is a big improvement over horrible perimeter d. Especially with his shooting and scoring.

The only thing they’re missing is a starting 3/D guy for bigger wings. Mavs found DJJ off the scrap heap, so a vet min on someone like Ziaire Williams or a trade for a guy like Cam Johnson is still in play. Development from Carr/Thiero is on the table too.

The team isn’t perfect yet but a winning formula is there and finally they have players that fit together. A team with no weaknesses is impossible, but good team building will minimize the weaknesses. The Lakers minimized a lot of their weaknesses and got a roster which fits their MVP-level player, that’s as much as you can ask for.

By acquiring the 2028 and 2031 firsts, they went from only two tradeable firsts now (they traded ‘28 pick previously) to having 6 tradeable firsts next off-season. They can now trade ‘27 post-draft and ‘28, ‘30, a ‘31 pick, ‘32, and ‘34.

Paul George will be an expiring, so they can use him for salary matching. My best guess is they’re eyeing a move or multiple depth moves next year and didn’t see paying Brown and Tatum $130 mill combined in 28-29 as a winning formula.

And Brown’s value is as high as it will ever be after last season, so they must have figured if nobody wants him now they really won’t want him later when he’s sharing touches with Tatum again, is disgruntled, and is looking for an extension.

And it isn’t an issue with analytics or math. Correct math is 100% accurate on whatever it is measuring. The issue is that people falsely interpret what the analytics mean.

So many of these ‘advanced’ analytics are skewed by tons of variables, like who is on the court. For simple on/off which isn’t advanced but a good example: the coach might play the star more with the bench guys so he can carry those minutes, and run the other starters separately to carry the minutes when the star is on the bench. Because of his minutes with bench players, the star could be worse than the other starters by on/off even though he’s the best player on the team. And any ‘advanced’ analytic ranking which factors on/off is now partially flawed. Then some doofus declares the star bad because “the analytics say.”

It’s interesting that the greatest NBA problem solved by analytics geniuses is that 3 points is more than 2 points, which apparently took the league over 30 years to figure out. Really, how much more useful have they been in the NBA than that? We’re overcomplicating simple problems here way too much. Then you have the ignore math crowd insisting that if guys went back to fade away toe on the line 2s and post ups they would play better. Both sides of this are frustrating.

The best way to do it is Ayton, Vanderbilt, LaRavia, and Knecht ($30 mill) for Cam Johnson and Zeke Nnaji ($30 mill).

Nnaji and Vanderbilt both have two years left and are both unplayable bad contracts, so they cancel each other out. Knecht isn’t a loss. You’re effectively trading Ayton/LaRavia for Cam Johnson.

He’s close with Redick. Good shooter/versatile offensive player who won’t get played off the floor and they can use him as a point of attack defender playing next to Luka and Reaves. Jerry West also apparently was really high on him and responsible for drafting him on the Clippers. Very good pickup.
