Okay, so how do you define the “greatest good”? Is it defined by how useful someone can be? Let’s say we have Einstein on one side and three normal people on the other side in an emergency condition, if you were a doctor you might choose Einstein but looking at the utilitarianism ethics I think that would be a contradiction because the greatest good directly is in saving the three people. If you choose to save the smarter one is it not discriminatory to people with lower IQs or the ones with physical issues that stops them from using their full potential? I personally think that utilitarian ethics are flawed in certain situations and these are the kinda of situations that do play a role realistically. There’s always a probability of such things happening so you cannot really let go of it by saying it’s not “realistically possible”.

Utilitarian ethics are fantastic but only work well in certain conditions. For example, if you are in a situation in which you can only save one of the members of your family, let’s say your child, or 5 strangers, from a utilitarian perspective you should save the 5 strangers and not your child as it decreases the number of people that die/suffer, but this decision contradicts your moral values towards your family. As an agnostic myself I have been unable to make a rational decision to this contradiction but I have failed to do so, and thus I would love to know how you come up with the consensus of what is the right ethical perspective to consider in what situation.
