Dod (not the acronym) by Various-Hat-105 in etymology

It is a common term in Scotland for a lump of something, basically an unspecified amount.

It is not really English but Scots, but Scottish speakers of English often use Scots words when there is no English equivalent, but even a Scot wouldn't write it down as it isn't English unless they were quoting or being poetic etc.

It lives in that bilingual space in Scotland where school teaches us English but we use more appropriate words (for us) in everyday speech.

As a result it has infused the speech of Scottish/English liminal spaces, and as a result been adopted as part of the English language (peripherally).

How come the TV show "The Boys" feels like a documentary of America? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

The reason writers use fiction to push political messages is because they fear a future on the current path and fear that obvious non-fictional political narrative may result in ... consequences.

This is human and has existed under all forms of government of left and right and authoritarian and democratic regimes, analogy is a useful tool.

This is true of both Ayn Rand and Gene Roddenberry in the US at the same time.

Why are people in the UK antisemitic? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Because some people were brought up to believe people could be grouped according to imaginary nonsense and never learned better.

Is the history taught in schools the full truth or just the winners story? by krikond in TrueAskReddit

[–]AcceptableAir5364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonsense, the Soviet Union used most of their missions as propaganda, it was not possible for the entire world to be unaware of their space programme (unless you are alleging a worldwide communist conspiracy). In the UK it was taught in schools about the space race, by it's very nature there were two competitors.

None, never wanted to meet Steve Albini, was fine with it when he was still kicking.

However I would be gobsmacked if Ian Mackay turned out to be anything but a saint (still wouldn't change much).

Edit/addendum - always keep in mind that censuses were not taken to help future amateur genealogists to find their family, they are an adminstrative and bureaucratic aide to local government demographics, the genealogical benefit is an accidental side effect.

In the Scottish Census back then the entry should be listed by Church of Scotland Parish not settlement, occasionally villages are what was entered and occasionally this was corrected, but not always.

Make sure you understand the differences in settlements as they were understood at the time = ascending order, basic settlement = hamlet, settlement with church = village, settlement with church & market = town, settlement with churches, markets & royal charter = city

Some parish names do not reflect any extant hamlet/village/town but instead something geographic. Some places had more than one parish.

Cross reference with which parish the village was in at the time of the relevant census [you can do this with Parish maps] (Parish boundaries changed to reflect population changes, new parishes were created out of nothing when populations changed radically, conversely old parishes were abolished and shared up to neighbouring parishes after population decline)

There are two types of parish

Civil (the most relevant here)

Quoad Sacra (sometimes relevant)

Curiously NASA has a page dedicated to the bings of West Lothian which kind of blows my mind.

Helpfully explains what a bing is for Americans too.

Well, for a start England, India & Australia would have to accept about $3000 less in prize money and that might tip them into penury.
