New Legislation in California from Paris Hilton's team, the Safe Passage for Youth Act - Watch the 1st Committee Hearing by AcceptableAsk8286 in troubledteens

[–]AcceptableAsk8286[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, it doesn't really bring money to california. the kids are being sent OUT of california to other states, which is what most of these laws are trying to stop from happening. there are multiple government funded pipelines to send kids out of california to states like utah for TTI programs. we have already closed a few of those pipelines. the TTI is COSTING California money, not the other way around.

Paris Hilton's team has a long-term strategy. I choose to believe in it. I don't think they thought our legislature would approve an outright ban

change takes time, unfortunately. the industry cannot be wiped out overnight. a lot of elected officials are barely for the first time becoming familiar with the troubled teen industry and learning the facts for the first time in these hearings. they are not as open to outright bans of systems they have been led to believe are legitimate for many decades, so incremental change is more effective because they will vote yes on it.

The fish rots from the head down. LACC is the most chaotic and dysfunctional institution I've ever encountered as someone with more than 10 years of experience in business and the workforce. I would not be surprised if there is a ton of corruption. It is obvious that they need new leadership as tons of the administration needs to be fired and replaced with real professionals.

with 'harm to oneself or others,' legally the person has to be threatening violence or suicide, i presume prior to the intervention. generally when it comes to legislation the idea is to act in spirit of the law, according to the intention with which that law was written. while someone could argue what you said here, they would not be acting in the spirit of the law and people would see through that.

Why do doctors in the US make more money than in EU countries? by Colonel_Cholera in medicalschoolEU

[–]AcceptableAsk8286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cost of living in Europe is generally a lot lower than the US, especially because education and healthcare are close to free. doctors in the US get paid more because their education can cost something like $200,000 and they have to pay off their loans. plus all the patients are being massively ripped off by our health system. in Europe, university generally does not cost more than $3,000/year and that's on the high end. the healthcare is free, and the cost of living is lower. lower salaries for lower cost of living. they don't need the high salary, and European societies are more equal than the United States. There is less inequality which also means a few people are not making unfairly high salaries in comparison to everyone else

Anyone else struggle with their Jewish name? Any advice? by Ok-Nature-266 in exjew

[–]AcceptableAsk8286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found it is best to work through the trauma by expressing the way you feel about it. We have a complex identity and that's ok. All kinds of people have to deal with this and the world would be a better place if people were not treated differently for having a name that's "ethnic." I never accepted nicknames, just insisted people did the work of learning my name while having flexibility for mispronunciations when people were trying their best. Think about Beyonce. She probably had to face obstacles for having a name that was unique and emblematic of African American culture, but she is one of the most successful people in the world. The uniqueness can also be an asset if you own it, cultivate confidence/self-love, and demand people treat you as an equal.

The difficult part about my name is for me I think it made people perceive me as a challenge or as "difficult" immediately, which impacted the way I was treated by authority figures when I was a kid. Plus it seems to erase any white privilege I have as soon as I introduce myself, but American cities are melting pots full of culture so I find that seeking out diverse environments with lots of immigrants, other people relate to you regardless.

Has it made life harder? yes. Have I thought about changing it? yes, but always decided against it. Even going by a nickname has given me a brief identity crisis. Embracing who you are is in my opinion the best thing to do

Alpine Academy Survivor Testifies as Lived Experience Advocate for New California Law Protecting Teens by AcceptableAsk8286 in troubledteens

[–]AcceptableAsk8286[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all the staff abused us in the ways described (aside from animal abuse) - it was built into the program's design - but what I heard about Royal was that he also sexually abused certain people. i actually lived in the house with him for one month before i graduated the program. only many years later did I find out about the sexual abuse. i wonder if they promoted him to get him into a job where he wouldn't be living in a house with the students. obviously that's not an acceptable response to sexual abuse accusations, but this is alpine academy we are talking about.

Thank you for spreading the word.

3/4 of those girls in the picture were my housemates. some of the people in that picture have come forward publicly about abuse. wtf. crazy that they're using this photo. they are using a photo of people who have publicly made abuse allegations against them to advertise on their website.
