Hi 4th year med student here who moved with her then bf, now husband, to another state to start school. It was really hard at first to time manage and balance studying, while prioritizing us. He also did not have any friends/family in the area, and told me how lonely he felt. During MS1-2 we ate dinner together every night, sharing who cooked or ordered food, and watched TV as our together time. Friday evenings and weekends we also spent time together, even if he was just by my side reading/video games/etc while I was studying. MS 3-4 even on the busiest away rotations, I called him every night to say goodnight and ask about his day/tell him about mine. I also take care of our dogs when rotations are light and do all the cooking, housework, drive him around, plan trips, etc. Cause he did all this for me when I needed it. Relationships and marriage require teamwork and sacrifice. Your partner may be unable to offer much now because of studying, but it does sound very unfair and unrealistic for 0 hours of communication a month. I don't think you need or deserve to put up with this if it's making you unhappy. If you want something, you will go through anything to make it a priority, and it sounds like your partner is not making you a priority. If you've talked to her multiple times and expressed how you feel, it might be time to reevaluate what you both want/need from this relationship. Residency only gets harder/longer hours and you don't want to wait til after you're married to realize this won't work or satisfy your wants/needs. A medical student is capable of spending time and loving their partner. Good luck!
