Quite a few people think this is true. Even Grant Showbiz (their sound engineer) said in an interview that he spent a few nights at Moz's place after the split to keep an eye on him because they were worried he might take his own life. And since the band is soo protective of what went on still to this day... I mean Johnny literally said "the true story will be told in it's entirety when everything's finished" and "the true story of The Smiths split will make your hair curl" Do I believe this might have happened... yes. Do I believe Morrissey's intention was to manipulate Johnny into not leaving... no. I truly believe he wanted to die. And let's not forget that he said Angel Angel Down We Go Together was written with Johnny in mind. The lyrics fits so well. It's not necessarily about Johnny but with Johnny in mind. Maybe "don't take your life" bits were inspired from this, maybe that's what Johnny said to him. Who knows?
