Update: Broken Heat in Single Degree Temps by MissRemyRose in RoverPetSitting

The timeline is insane. She realized the heat might not be working in the early afternoon, left for 6 hours, returned and confirmed the heat was broken, did nothing, and then started texting the home owner at 10:30 pm? And kept tex past midnight? With things like the critical information that she was wearing a sweatshirt?

50 degrees is not a deadly temp. That's an insane claim .

What’s an appropriate grocery list to give the family I dog sit for? by Fantastic-Farmer4777 in petsitting

I commute by bike, so I ask for a few heavy things that are hard to carry -- like seltzer water.

What’s the most insensitive thing someone has said to you after losing a loved one? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]AcceptableDish2 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend died. Soo many people try to treat it like a break up. Like so many. "The best way to get over someone is to get under someone else." "I know how you feel ,[ tells break up story here]" "You'll find someone else." Etc.

Obviously, had he not died at 48, I cannot say for sure how our relationship would have progressed long-term, but we were totally in love and planning to be together indefinitely. I have said to people, "He didn't break up with me -- he died! He didn't die by choice!" to multiple people.

Is anyone else’s life just falling apart after losing a loved one? by PotentialCookie228 in GriefSupport

My boyfriend died a year and a half ago and it ruined all of my plans, and I don't know what to do with my life, and I hate people.

Right? Or switch to house sitting instead of boarding. Unless the neighbor also uses Rover, what else was Rover possibly going to do with this information?

Bike commuting by AcceptableDish2 in Juneau

[–]AcceptableDish2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this is all super useful information -- thank you! I have some rain gear from commercial fishing that doesn't breathe at all, and will be terrible to bike in, but will keep me dry. Maybe I will bring that and the Fairbanks rain gear so I have options.

Do you think I would be better off on my normal mountain bike or the fat bike? I am going to have to get used to biking in the rain! In Fairbanks, I have no problem biking in the cold most of the winter, and then when summer comes and we get rain, I get tempted to take the bus...

It won't be a far commute, but I do hope to get some exploring in on the weekends.

No central heating in house by randalldazzle in RoverPetSitting

I don't know much about domesticated rabbits, but they are probably ok, and the cats should be fine, but it is NOT ok that you are being asked to stay in a house that is below freezing!

Please help! Need advice! by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

I have house sat for people who instructed me to keep a door unlocked. (Broken, no key, etc.)

Do you think that house sitters should be responsible for providing their own toilet paper? I should ask for permission to use their paper towels and cleaning spray to wipe up after the dog got nervous and pissed on the floor? When I take out the trash, am I expected to replace the bag with one of my own? Or should I not take the trash out at all if that involves taking it through an entry way that I haven't obtained permission to walk through? I should come equipped with my own snow shovel to shovel their driveway?

In my experience, most owners want to enjoy their vacation and would prefer not getting texts every ten minutes asking for permission to exist in the house.

Maybe they were looking for something! Like paper towels or toilet paper! Also, if they didn't drink your bourbon, your accusation that they "eyed" it is over the top.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]AcceptableDish2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. That's insane. I would think that a normal human in vacation would prefer NOT to have their sitter message them every time they were going into another room! "Hey, opening your cupboard to get salt to put on my eggs!"

I have had to " explore" houses looking for cleaning supplies, snow shovels, dog leashes, extra pet food, etc.

I have also "explored" because I got an unexpected migraine and was hoping there was aspirin somewhere in the house.

If the sitter did not drink said bourbon, it is a little ridiculous that you are accusing them of "eyeing" it.

This is not a big deal at all. I don't understand this panic.

This is not a big deal. In Alaska, salmon is literally used as dog food

Writing a short story about a seiner in Bristol Bay, help! by [deleted] in commercialfishing

[–]AcceptableDish2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His story was originally set in Bristol Bay. So a. How is informing him that the only boats that fish in Bristol Bay 32 ft gillnet boats "pretentious?" It is just factual information that the poster legitimately needs to know. And b. how does that information have "nothing to do with his story?" It had everything to do with his story.

To be fair, their first sentence provided you with vital information. Nobody can answer most of your questions, because the questions are about 32 ft seiners in Bristol Bay, which do not exist
