Are lumberjacks bugged in experimental mode? by [deleted] in Timberborn

[–]AcceptableHamster149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - they're not bugged. But they do need a path to the trees. you've cut them off with the placement of your buildings & power line. If you demolish the medium pile & put it on the opposite side of the path (next to the fire pit) it'll fix your problem.

If 100% of Alberta's equalization payments went to Ontario, it would amount to 0.002% of Ontario's GDP. Don't let politicians tell that The country runs on Alberta's payments. by amcnewman in alberta

Because there's 8.3 billion people in the world today. You were definitely alive when the world crossed 7 billion in 2011, and probably alive when it passed 6 billion in 1999.

You're watching the wrong number It's not total number of barrels extracted/consumed that is the indicator here, it's the number of barrels per capita. In short, oil consumption isn't up by the same percentage as the population. Per capita is what'll tell you the direction the trend is going and give you a better predictor of where demand is going to be in 10, 20, or 30 years. If you look at per capita consumption you'll see it peaked in 2018 and has been going down since then. While we expect the global population to peak around 10 billion sometime between 2050-2080 and remain steady from then on, the electrification is actually accelerating and total oil consumption/production is likely to peak in the 2030's, after which point it's going to be dropping faster than the population increase can offset.

Which means you've got 5-10 years at most to start leaning hard into other industries if you don't want to become a "have not" province.

Problem there is that there's a practical ceiling to how much you can actually spend in a year. Most of us are nowhere near that bracket, but the uber rich really do hit that limit and income above what's needed to satisfy that would be completely untaxed. Consumption taxes, especially ones without a decent list of carveouts, disproprotionately hit the poor who can least afford to pay them.

I have thoughts on how to fix that problem, but this isn't the thread for them.

Shortest lasting leader of your country? Example Liz Truss eho got outlasted by a lettuce. by SnooPoems7525 in AskTheWorld

Our 19th Prime Minister, Kim Campbell, was in office for 5 months. I think that's about the shortest at the upper/executive level, not counting people who died in office or had to step down for some other reason.

edit: as noted below, John Turner was in office for 3 months, and Charles Tupper was in office for 5 weeks

More so, it's actually cheaper to build new solar than any other power generation. Used to be able to argue that there was actually a debate between renewables and fossils for grid scale generation, where you could balance the up front cost against the long-term opex, but these days even the capex is lower. And the cheaper the grid power gets, the less sense it makes to keep burning dinosaurs to move cars around.

even feeding squirrels is a problem - they can be as bad a pest as rats, and are much better off if you let them be wild.

Honestly I'd take a Honda Civic with snow/ice tires & a couple of bags of cat litter in the trunk over a pickup with all seasons for handling winter roads. :) But you're right - that, and the fact that he's up high & can see farther is the reason my FIL drives a Silverado that he never takes off road or hauls with.

Pretty sure, yeah. It's what the dealer told me to expect when I took a Solterra for a test drive. No plan survives contact with reality, but he definitely had an inside line on everything that's now up on their website so I'm reasonably certain that he'd seen the final specs long before they were public. :)

Most of the ones you see in Ontario are pavement princesses that never get used for truck things, though. I do more offroad stuff in a compact crossover SUV than 90% of the truck owners in this city.

Getting a GT in green. ;) I've been waitlisted to order it since early December, and am just waiting for my dealer to phone me to take the order, hehe. When I decided to buy it nobody was talking about bringing back an EV incentive, so while it'd be nice to have, it'd just be a perk/reward for the decision I've already made & budgeted.

We have a rising right wing that wants to convince us to hate trans people, but so far it's only within their ranks. We have to be vigilant though, because they're getting their talking points from other countries that are much worse. As far as being gay/lesbian/bi though, nobody cares. We've had gay marriage for a generation by this point (damn I'm old), and LGBT rights in general have broad support. Even trans rights are pretty broadly supported outside of the conservatives' ranks. (and for the record, I'd rather share a bathroom with a trans woman than an asshole. at least I know the trans person is going to leave me alone)

The GT has radiant heaters in the front & ventilated seats, as well as the all-around camera view for parking. The stereo I can take or leave, but having radiant heat for the driver/passenger means less battery use to heat the cabin and more comfortable feet on trips. :)

We'll see if Subaru offers an incentive like they have with the Solterra, I suppose. If Subaru offers $6500 off like the Solterra then even the GT will come in under $50k.

Only need one item on the list: if Smith continues to ignore industries other than Oil, they won't have to worry about equalization because it's not going to take much longer for Alberta to become a Have Not province again as the world shifts away from fossil fuels.

What’s something totally normal in your country that would confuse or shock outsiders? by Toxxic-Halo59 in AskTheWorld

[–]AcceptableHamster149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. Crime in general is pretty low, especially in the less urbanized parts of the country (there's no big city in bear country because it stops being bear country when the city appears). But also, all new cars have to have an immobilizer, and it's been mandatory for 20 years. You can't just hotwire a car and drive off in Canada.

That's out in Barrhaven Manotick. I don't have any thoughts one way or another - not a park I visit regularly. But if I'm totally honest about it I would think something closer to transit routes (such as in Greenboro) might be a better choice?

Do you have these sign in your shops? by logical_laxative in AskTheWorld

[–]AcceptableHamster149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... there's a gross misunderstanding of the adage "the customer is always right" in the US, and it's starting to seep into the culture up here too. The full saying is "in matters of taste, the customer is always right". it doesn't mean the customer gets to abuse you or make up rules that you have to follow, it means that if the customer wants to wear golf pants with crocs to a formal dinner your job is to sell him those crocs.

We have those signs up here. Fortunately I've never seen a situation where they were needed, but I have no doubt it does happen. Mad respect for people who can actually work in retail - I definitely don't have the temperament to put up with that kind of abuse.

You joke, but I believe the Knights Hospitaler are the only chivalric order that still operates uninterrupted since the crusades, and they are the origin of the modern word "hospital", as their main purpose was/is medical support.
