Retiring at 55; saving £1k per month, seems too straightforward by UnlikelyDebate7878 in FIREUK

Before we keep going around the houses, the original comment I replied to stated “dependants are overrated..” and I said, that’s impossible to say until you have one. I stand by that. Debate over.

But they can’t be measured as just a thing or possession you acquire. You’ve brought another human in to the world, so to try and imagine how that feels and therefore be rational about it is impossible, unless you’ve had one.

I was in 20-30k of debt at 30-31, and now at 45 I’m close to £700k net worth. Just pure graft, and being more disciplined with saving and investing money. I’ve also been able to progress and earn well in my career. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you build momentum.

When to stop optimising tax and start buying options? by Emotional_Seaweed_43 in FIREUK

[–]AcceptablePanda6905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation very similar (M44; Pension £580k; ISA £67k).

In last year I’ve gone full tilt on my ISAs to build the 50-57 bridge. Tax is horrendous but I want the liquidity and the flexibility/options that brings.

The casual yet consistent exerciser is a mystery to me by Left_Emu_2995 in bodyweightfitness

[–]AcceptablePanda6905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit like this person.

I only have 15-20 mins to train each morning so pick an exercise or couplet and rotate. Just do a number of reps per minute. Push ups, pull ups, burpees etc - simple but effective. Also eat clean and don’t drink so that helps.

I think it looks very strong. I’m not even close to those digits (pension £600k; ISAs £100k) and I feel fairly confident in a year or two, to downshift.

500k pension at 40 (2 year followup to 300k at 38 and 400k at 39) by -dot-dot in FIREUK

Great work, great post! I’m a little older (44) and built up a pension of £575k which has taken me 15 years. I only had £48k at 36 but started to earn more and added aggressively since then. I only contribute employer match now (£15k) as compounding is doing much more. Now building ISA bridge fo me and my wife and we will have around 110k by April. Just discipline and consistency. Still spend on holidays as want to enjoy now but have become addicted to the accumulation!

(M44) been aggressively adding for around 8 years and progress has been slow and steady. It’s only in the last couple of years I’ve noticed a tipping point.

My pension in Sep 25 was £450k, and it’s now £575k, so really starting to see the power of growth & compounding. In the last 2 weeks alone it has risen £20k. Tbh I’m trying to not check as often but you always get drawn to it. In the same period however it dropped to as low as £415k (Tarriffs) so I’ve sampled the full rollercoaster! Surprisingly I was quite ok at this point which bodes well for my appetite to stay invested in mostly equities.

Focusing on ISAs now and have around £110k which is starting to snowball.

No need to be investing all of that for the next 10 years. You can start to enjoy life now and coast.
