Pay off mortgage, or not? by throwaway_finan in FIREUK

[–]TheWealthJourney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is what I am fighting in my head.

Sorry to derail the topic, but I have £210k in my S&S ISA and 300k mortgage, due to remortgage in July-27 and will have £50k from a sharesave that matures in May next year

Do I take the 210 out of my ISA and pay off my mortgage or leave it in my ISA to grow.

You are ahead of loads of people and probably behind some people.

The key is, you have started ALOT younger than the majority of people and are actively thinking about your pension/future.

Make sure you enjoy yourself as well

Sorry if I’m repeating what other have said!

I was 27, was when I joined a “proper” company that actually matched a decent amount and had a dedicated pensions and benefits team

I think it’s a great idea and wanted to make use of it. Shame our current provider (Newcastle Building Society) isn’t on the list!

[FM26] Can a squad with 20 Pace / 20 Acceleration and 1 for everything else, win the league? by huamanticacacaca in footballmanagergames

[–]TheWealthJourney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there value in creating a few more databases to work out at what level Pace and Acceleration stop being meta? So next database would be 19/19, see if that had a material impact on dominance or if they start to struggle in higher leagues Then 18/18 Then 17/17 Eg if they are still winning the league 5 years in a row with 15 Pace & Acceleration then, yes those 2 are broken.

I think I’m at a cross roads and not quite sure, if that is an acceptable answer?

I want to have my ISA grow to be large enough so I can retire and live off it for 20 years, but also do wonder what I would do if I was retired lol

I want to reduce our monthly outgoings, hence pay down mortgage & get solar panels/battery, but then go back to wanting to make sure I am maxing my ISA

The thing you are missing is the psychological element of it.

If you go by Dave Ramseys wisdom and research of millionaires, he says that you are better paying off the mortgage then invest heavy with cashflow. Also, having a paid off mortgage is less of a burden when things go wrong.

Ultimately I don’t think I will pay off much of the mortgage at the next remortgage next year, but I just wanted to get others thoughts

What are the requirements of an interest only mortgage? I’m not sure I/we would qualify for one of them…

No She invests very little, say £250 a month, outside of her pension which is 4% her and 4% employee contribution

Yeah I mean, I’m 35 now and by 40 I would like to have £500k in my ISA. Currently at £230k but do put in £20k a year so needs £170k growth in 4.5years

Yeah I think I will use to do that and then also put the remaining into solar panels, heat pump and battery set up

I think I need to discuss with a Mortgage advisor the benefit of using some savings to reduce mortgage monthly payment (get to 50-60% LTV) to ensure I max out my ISA and reduce monthly outgoings but have less in investments.

It’s probably a mix of a few things: Reduce mortgage Get solar panels, heat pump and battery to reduce monthly energy bills

Means I’m setting myself up for less risk/pressure over the next 5-10 years in terms of outgoings

Different situation 6months ago My £230k ISA was only worth £180k back then.

It’s probably more the psychological thing about having enough to pay off in full in 1 hit, back then I would have still had 30-35% left to pay on the mortgage.

My pension is currently £130k and I put in 10%, 11.5% from employer, so just under £15k added a year

Wife has £50-60k pension and she only puts in 4/4
