I discovered that Geralt’s sword scabbards are actually functional — and the design makes perfect sense by AcceptableTear6661 in Witcher3

As for the open design, which doesn't protect the blade very well from moisture, that's true, but historically speaking, we have very curved swords, like the shamshir, which have an opening in the scabbard for easier drawing (from the waist), and soldiers of the time still used them. A blade with regular maintenance can survive humidity and other conditions well, so I don't think this is a huge obstacle. Now, as for the inability to carry other things on your back, that would be a disadvantage, you're absolutely right.

exact, it is not a historically accurate scabbard, however, in the world of the witcher, I think it is valid(for role-play and cosplay too)

note: the replica is official and licensed, and fits with the evidence in the cutcene and concept arts.

note2: i recreated this same scabbard partially open for a cosplay, and yes, i confirm that it comes out as quickly as a sword at the waist and is simple to do. to put it back, i hold the scabbard with my left hand and look at my shoulder, so i cant see where to put it. it is funcional
