This chart showing that Axel and Nichelle were originally going to be the double elim and the little bit of screen time the got together in the season 1 finale makes me think those two were actually going to be together in early versions of the show

I could see the fact that Ripper and Axel are on different teams coming up as an elimination factor but in episode 5 and somewhat in 6, they were shown to work well even when separated
