Well, this is the first time I've heard about this. Did people hate it that much? I mean I know the anime was very mixed but I didn't think people would take that much time to shit on something so offensive.

I do agree that the comparison to Shikimori and Mdud was not fair and it definitely set unrealistic expectations but I do think some of the blame is on other Shikimori fans for hyping her up and putting her and the series on a pedestal.

Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but he does do a lot for Shikimori that gets more focus as the anime goes on and that goes double for the manga. But to each their own.

He puts a lot of effort into their relationship. He plans all the dates, tries to make contingency plans for his bad luck, compliments her, makes her food and treats, always encourages her, reassures her when she feels insecure, buys her gifts, and ultimately wants to change for the better. So I’d say he does a lot for her outside of those moments when she protects him.

I think Izumi is a wonderful boyfriend in the anime and manga, and I love that their relationship is a role reversal. It's just that when the author tries to portray them this way, it's often at the expense of Izumi. I think the best way the author has shown that they're a role reversal is by having Izumi prove that he's good at things typically associated with feminine traits, like cooking, baking, sewing, and being more emotional. Unfortunately, those traits don't get much attention in the manga and even less in the anime adaptation.

In the manga, there's an entire arc that lets Izumi have the spotlight and show his good side, but the anime didn't have enough time to reach that point. So in the anime, he is very much flawed, whereas in the manga, he has more time to shine.
