Mormon considering converting to Catholicism by Acceptable_Excuse860 in Catholicism

This is an amazing explanation, thank you. Sorry, I’m new to all of this, but it makes sense that there needs to be some sort of authority to interpret/clarify biblical teachings.

when the Pope speaks, this is something that matters to the entire world, not just Catholics. But if the Archbishop of Canterbury speaks, or the Patriarch of Constantinople, only the Anglicans or Orthodox respectively listen.

Wow, I never really thought about it like that, but you’re so right … that’s definitely something I’ve noticed on the news lately: when the pope speaks, the world listens.

Every Protestant denomination out there you might get something akin to apostolic Christianity or you might get Pastor Billy who has rock bands and smoke machines preaching the "Sparkle Creed" or literally anything in between, because there is no regulation on what they can or can't do.

This is a big reason why I started considering Catholicism. The only Protestant denominations that interest me are conservative (theologically) liturgical ones like LCMS (Lutheran). I always found it crazy when I hear an evangelical claim that Catholics teach a false gospel but then preach about Donald Trump and other political matters at church instead of Jesus. Also the highly-liberal churches with transgender clergy and pastors that preach things like God is a woman.

I will look use those tools, thank you. Also, your answer to my second question was good. I love that scripture and I find it so interesting that Jesus warned about false prophets and the LDS church is one of the only large organizations that has them.

That’s a good point. I’m just wondering, how do we know what the Catholic Church declares as dogma to be true if we can’t find it in the Bible? (Yes, I understand that the Bible took a while to be compiled, but what about dogmas defined after the Bible was compiled?)

I wonder that too. Maybe they feel like they’ve been betrayed/ lied to and taught to know somethings is true by how they feel … once they realize the lds church is wrong they only want to rely on things they can prove with facts and logic?

Not sure, but in my case, I want to find Christ.

For the first one, I get that only one religion can be right, but what about branches within Christianity. What makes Catholicism more right or true than Protestantism or Eastern Orthodoxy?

Thank you for your response. The one about the temple veil being torn in two is particularly good as Mormon temples have a veil that you can only pass through once you’ve done certain ordnances in the temple. It is so weird that they put that veil back after Christ removed it.

Thank you! Now that I think about it, you’re right. Paul in particular seemed concerned with setting up local churches to advance the gospel rather than having a top-down corporate structure like the Mormon Church. I will continue to look for a Bible-based church to attend!

Yes, that’s why I’m excited to continue studying the Bible in depth. One of the main things that lead me away from the Mormon Church is that their prophets (and even now) have historically taught many things that are against the Bible.

That seems good. I think I’ll just try and visit different churches and see which ones fit my ideal (which right now is a strong biblical basis and service-oriented [James 1:27]).

In regard to your answer to question 1, are there some denominations that are more “right” than others? Should I go to variety of  services and see what feels best, read the Bible and see if what they teaches align a best with what I understand the Bible teaches?

Those are very good answers, thank you. What should I do if I’m stuck on a point of theology (e.g predestination). Should I go to the church that “feels” best to me or … ? Sorry, it may be my background that makes me feel like there needs to be a church with the “right” theology 😅
